"Avatar" leads box office for second weekend
LOS ANGELES - Reigning champ "Avatar" easily beat newcomer "Sherlock Holmes" at the Christmas holiday box office in North America after a closely followed duel that saw both films post sizzling sales, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. "Avatar," a costly 3-D extravaganza from "Titanic" director James Cameron, earned $75 million during the three days beginning December 25, said distributor 20th Century Fox.
Charlie Sheen out of jail after domestic incident
LOS ANGELES - Actor Charlie Sheen, star of the hit sitcom "Two and a Half Men," has been released from jail in the Colorado ski resort city of Aspen after his Christmas Day arrest on domestic violence charges, police said. Sheen, 44, was booked on felony charges of second-degree assault and menacing, and a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief, all of which were "coupled with a domestic violence component," the Aspen Police Department said.
"It's Complicated": a man's film in a woman's world
LOS ANGELES - Nancy Meyers, the middle-aged men of America thank you. While older men are most often portrayed in films and on television as guys chasing the skirts of women half their age, your new movie "It's Complicated" plays them somewhat differently.
Merge Records: 20 years of glorious noise
NEW YORK - In the summer of 1987, 19-year-old Mac McCaughan and his bandmates stumbled on an idea as old as rock 'n' roll itself. Rather than sending demo tapes to major record companies, they followed in the do-it-yourself footsteps of punk-rock idols such as the Buzzcocks and Minor Threat and started their own label. But more than promote their own band, they wanted to document the local music in the college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
A Minute With: Daniel Day Lewis on "Nine"
NEW YORK - Daniel Day-Lewis has not appeared on a live theater's stage in decades, but he takes on a uniquely theatrical role for new movie musical, "Nine," which begins its broad U.S. release Christmas day. The two-time Oscar winner more often than not plays driven men in movie dramas, as with Bill "The Butcher" Cutting for director Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" and oil baron Daniel Plainview in "There Will be Blood."
Brittany Murphy funeral service set for Thursday
LOS ANGELES - A private funeral service for actress Brittany Murphy, who died this week after suffering cardiac arrest at age 32, was set for Thursday at a Hollywood Hills cemetery. Murphy, who co-starred in the films "Clueless" and "8 Mile," collapsed in the bathroom of her Los Angeles home on Sunday. An autopsy was performed and results are pending results of toxicology tests, but officials have said there were no signs of trauma or foul play.
Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins split
LOS ANGELES - Oscar winning actors Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins have split up after more than two decades together, Sarandon's representative said on Wednesday. "Actress Susan Sarandon and her partner of 23 years, actor Tim Robbins, have announced that they separated over the summer," Sarandon's representative Teal Cannaday said in a statement.
Fox to order more "Idol" -- with or without Cowell
LOS ANGELES - Fox is near a deal to order more seasons of "American Idol" -- with or without its most popular judge, Simon Cowell. The network's current contract with "Idol" producers 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia extends through the end of the 2011. But the network is working on a new deal that includes three more seasons of "Idol," though that number could change.
Susan Boyle blocks Alicia Keys from top of chart
LOS ANGELES - There's just no stopping Susan Boyle on the U.S. pop chart. Her debut album "I Dreamed a Dream" claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for a fourth week in a row Wednesday, denying Alicia Keys a shot at the top.
The secret comic-book origin of "Sherlock Holmes"
LOS ANGELES - Before "Sherlock Holmes" was a movie opening on Christmas Day, it was a comic. Sort of.
