LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The costly 3-D extravaganza "Avatar" spent a second weekend atop the North American box office on Sunday, fending off a strong challenge from newcomer "Sherlock Holmes" as Christmas-holiday moviegoers powered overall sales to a new record.
Entertainment | Film
"Avatar" earned $75 million during the three days beginning December 25, said distributor 20th Century Fox. Internationally, the sci-fi film led the pack again, with $145 million from 108 markets.
Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes" followed with $65.4 million in North America, while Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" opened at No. 3 with $50.2 million.
"It's Complicated," a new Universal Pictures comedy starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, was a distant No. 4 with a solid $22.1 million.
Sales for all four pictures handily exceeded the expectations of their respective studios, and executives were confident that holiday-fueled midweek business would bring the record-breaking year to a strong close.
The only sour note was struck by the Weinstein Co. musical "Nine," which earned just $5.5 million in its first weekend of wide release, good enough for only No. 8.
The top 12 films grossed a record $278 million, smashing the mark of $261 million set in July 2008 when "The Dark Knight" was the top film, said tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office. It forecast record sales of $10.5 billion this year, up nine percent from 2008.
STRONG HOLD FOR "AVATAR"
"Avatar," from "Titanic" writer/director James Cameron, has earned $212.3 million after 10 days of release across the United States and Canada. The film enjoyed a surprisingly strong hold, losing just three percent of its opening-weekend audience.
The foreign total rose to $405 million after a drop of just 12 percent. Fox said the film was No. 1 in all markets, except for India where it followed a local title.
"Avatar" garnered almost as much attention for its reported record-breaking budget of at least $300 million as for its eco-friendly tale of a disabled ex-Marine sent from Earth to infiltrate an alien race of 10-foot (3 meter)-tall blue people in order to save his polluted planet.
British director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" looks set to give star Robert Downey Jr. his second movie franchise after "Iron Man." It ranks as the fifth-biggest December opener, and it set a Christmas Day opening record of $24.8 million.
Warner Bros. is talking about sequel prospects but no decisions have been made yet, said Dan Fellman, the studio's distribution president. Downey reinvents the ascetic Victorian sleuth as a dashing superhero; Jude Law co-stars as Watson.
"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," a live action/animated sequel to the 2007 worldwide hit, ranks No. 7 among all-time December openings. Since getting an early start on the holiday with a Wednesday release, it has earned $77 million. Betty Thomas directed.
"It's Complicated," an $80 million movie from writer/director Nancy Meyers, predictably played to older women, in line with her past films such as "What Women Want" and "The Holiday." But Universal said the film earned good grades from men, and it expected more of them to show up once they have caught "Avatar" and "Sherlock Holmes."
The No. 5 spot went to "Up in the Air," which rose three places in its first weekend of wide release. Director Jason Reitman's meditation on love and loneliness in corporate America has earned $24.5 million since Paramount Pictures released it in 15 theaters on December 4.
"Nine" also went wide after a limited debut last weekend, and its total rose to $5.9 million. Weinstein Co's international president David Glasser said the film struggled to connect with moviegoers in the heartland, but did better in the big cities.
20th Century Fox is a unit of News Corp. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc. Universal Pictures is a unit of General Electric Co. Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc. Weinstein Co is privately held.
