Apple warns iPhones vulnerable; fixes bug
ADVERTISEMENT
LAS VEGAS - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> has released an iPhone software patch to fix a critical software bug uncovered by two independent researchers that make the devices susceptible to secret attacks by hackers. Apple said on Friday that customers need to download the patch onto their computer using iTunes, then install it on their iPhone by connecting the device to the computer.
Global mobile market bottoms, grows anew: iSuppli
SAN FRANCISCO - Global handset shipments grew nearly 5 percent in the second quarter, the first quarter- on-quarter growth in 9 months, marking a reversal of course for the struggling market, researchers at iSuppli said on Friday. Worldwide shipments of cellphones rose 4.7 percent to 265 million units in the second quarter compared with the first quarter, helped by strength in the Middle East and Latin America, but were still down 15.1 percent compared with a year ago, according to preliminary data from iSuppli.
Apple, labels stir up deluxe digital Cocktail
DENVER - Downloadable music didn't kill the album cover. The CD did. By shrinking the size and visual impact of the recording industry's mainstay product -- and then encasing it in plastic security packaging -- the shiny aluminum disc marginalized the LP to a nostalgic memory. By the time the MP3 format came along, consumers shrugged off the absence of album art and liner notes.
Yahoo Labs chief sees real-time search opportunity
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> is considering developing new real-time search capabilities, even as it outsources its existing Internet search technology to Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>. Yahoo's Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Yahoo Labs, said that the company could potentially "mine" messages from Twitter, the popular microblogging service, to offer Web surfers search results beyond those offered by Microsoft's Bing.
FCC seeks details on Google app rejection for iPhone
SAN FRANCISCO - The Federal Communications Commission is seeking additional information about Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> decision to reject Google Inc's <GOOG.O> voice application for the iPhone. The Google application is seen by some as a competitive threat to the voice services that come with the iPhone, which is carried exclusively in the United States by AT&T Inc <T.N>.
Videogame industry looks for second-half comeback
SAN FRANCISCO - With the once-resilient videogame industry mired in a slump, investors are looking to big-name titles and potential price cuts for game consoles in the second half of the year to help spur a rebound in sales. Major game publishers Activision Blizzard Inc <ATVI.O> and Electronic Arts Inc <ERTS.O> will report quarterly results next week, on the heels of dismal June U.S. videogame sales, which registered their biggest drop since 2000.
British hacker loses U.S. extradition appeal
LONDON - A Briton wanted in the United States for breaking into NASA and Pentagon networks in "the biggest military hack of all time" lost an appeal against his extradition Friday, making a U.S. trial more likely. Gary McKinnon, 43, has fought a three-year battle to avoid extradition, including going to the European Court of Human Rights, but he appeared to have run out of options as Britain's High Court ruled against his latest appeal Friday.
China-based cyber attack hits Australia film festival site
MELBOURNE - A China-based cyber attack on Saturday shut down online bookings for a leading Australian film festival, days before a controversial visit by a leading critic of Beijing, organizers said. The attack on the Melbourne International Film Festival's site is the second in just a few days. It comes after Beijing on Friday summoned Australia's ambassador to protest at Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer's planned visit to the festival.
Drum roll for the first robotic gamelan orchestra
NEW YORK - What do you get when you cross a cyborg with a set of ancient Indonesian musical instruments? GamelaTron, of course. A love for music and a fascination for robotics prompted Brooklyn men Eric Singer and Taylor Kuffner to come up with the idea to build to the world's first fully robotic gamelan orchestra.
YouTube wedding video sends Chris Brown to charts
LOS ANGELES - In the same week that Chris Brown went to YouTube to apologize for assaulting former girlfriend Rihanna, a viral videoclip of a wedding party dancing down the aisle to Brown's song "Forever" returned him to the charts. The uptempo tune sold 50,000 downloads during the week ended July 26, up a hefty 1,721% from the previous week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It thusly re-enters the Hot Digital Songs chart at No. 21, its first time on the list since January. It's also the best sales week for any of Brown's songs since Christmas week of 2008, when "Forever" sold 77,000 downloads.
