(AHN) - A crucial House committee has cleared the way for President Barack Obama's ambitious healthcare reform plan to seek a floor vote this fall. The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted late Friday, giving the Democrats and Republicans five weeks to clearly define the legislation. The bill, which has a budget limit of $1 trillion over the next 10 years, was passed with a 31-28 vote. All of the Republicans and five Democrats on the energy and commerce committee voted against it. Obama said in a weekly statement on Saturday that he supports the bill that extends "unemployment insurance and health insurance for folks who have lost jobs." Commenting on the economy's improving condition, he added, "long-term investments in innovation are needed to ensure our nation's long-term economic growth." "By training the highest skilled workforce in the world, reforming the health care system to free business from spiraling costs, and building a green energy economy, we will create a new foundation that will encourage the innovation needed to move America forward," Obama said. The healthcare bill aims at providing insurance for the 46 million people who cannot afford high healthcare costs in the country. It also restricts health insurers from raising their premiums or denying coverage on any medical basis. The legislation would allow "entrepreneurs to innovate and businesses to compete without being saddled with skyrocketing insurance costs." Obama said. The fate of the bill that is due for a vote in full house next month is still unclear.
