US-ENTERTAINMENT Summary
Reuters - Sunday, March 1
Fans stunned by Rihanna-Chris Brown reconciliation
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - Fans of singers Chris Brown and Rihanna expressed dismay on Saturday at reports the couple had reunited just three weeks after Brown was alleged to have assaulted her. Celebrity magazines People and Us Weekly said that the R&B stars were spending time together at the Miami home of hip hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs -- and that Rihanna's father was supporting her decision.
Famed U.S. broadcaster Paul Harvey dies at age 90
CHICAGO - Paul Harvey, who captivated millions of radio listeners daily with his staccato delivery, firmly set opinions and old-fashioned outlook, died on Saturday at the age of 90, ABC News said. Harvey died at a hospital near his winter home in Phoenix, the network said. No cause of death was immediately available.
Jennifer Hudson calls music "therapy" after family deaths
LOS ANGELES - Singer Jennifer Hudson told chat show host Oprah Winfrey on Friday that music is her "therapy" after the murders of three of her relatives last year. Hudson and Winfrey did not mention the October killings during the singer's television appearance, but when asked how she was doing Hudson said she is "really good."
Ed McMahon ill with pneumonia
LOS ANGELES - Ed McMahon, the longtime sidekick to Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show," has been hospitalized for nearly a month with pneumonia and other medical problems, a spokesman said on Friday. Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman said McMahon, who turns 86 next week, is currently in the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital.
Lionel Richie still on the "Go" after 30 years
NEW YORK - "Hello" may be among Lionel Richie's signature No. 1 songs, but for more than 30 years, the singer-songwriter hasn't so much as paused for a "bye for now." The five-time Grammy Award recipient and Academy Award winner has been a fixture on the pop, R&B, adult contemporary and dance charts -- beginning in 1974 as a founding member of the Commodores, then as a solo artist and producer from 1981 on -- with a consistency seldom seem in the music business.
Publishers dust off vintage songs for new audiences
LOS ANGELES - There's no telling when lightning will strike a song. Consider the case of "At Last," the Mack Gordon/Harry Warren composition immortalized by Etta James. Beyonce performed it in "Cadillac Records," the recent movie about Chess Records, and then practically made it the theme song of President Barack Obama's inauguration.
Jonas Bros. movie may foretell an end to innocence
LOS ANGELES - When red-hot boy band the Jonas Brothers debut their 3-D movie on Friday in many sold-out U.S. theaters, it will mark a new beginning for them and, perhaps, the end of their youthful innocence. So far Kevin, 21, Joe, 19 and Nick, 16 have mostly avoided the pitfalls of celebrity -- constant hounding by paparazzi, names trashed in tabloids and on gossip websites, and public scrutiny of personal choices, to name a few.
Axl Rose says Slash is "a cancer"
LOS ANGELES - The handful of optimistic Guns N' Roses fans still holding out for a reunion of the band's classic lineup can probably call it a day. In a newly published interview, singer Axl Rose describes former bandmate Slash as "a cancer," elevating his distaste for the top-hatted guitarist to a new level.
Leonardo "Codex" reveals youthful self-portrait
ROME - A sketch obscured by handwriting for five centuries in one of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks may be a youthful self-portrait, according to Italian experts who "aged" the sketch to compare to confirmed later self-portraits. Hidden under layers of thick writing on a page of the "Codex on the Flight of Birds," the sketch was spotted by the Italian scientific journalist Piero Angela, who will present images of his discovery on Italian state television RAI on Saturday.
U2 album a hit, Bono campaigning a miss: critics
LONDON - Irish band U2 releases its 12th studio album on Monday and while reviews are generally glowing, critics argue that lead singer Bono's dual role as rock star and campaigning "saviour" may be meddling with the music. "No Line On The Horizon" hits the shelves in Europe on Monday and in the United States on Tuesday, and, as one of 2009's biggest record launches, will be closely watched by a business seeking to reverse deep declines in album sales.
