ADVERTISEMENT Commonly referred to by his nickname, Bibi, the 59-year-old Netanyahu entered politics as a brash young man, then was driven from the prime minister's office at the end of a turbulent term. He cast himself as a silver-haired statesman as he embarked on a comeback a decade later. Netanyahu has promised to expand settlements in the West Bank and says an agreement with the Palestinians is currently impossible. Instead, he says Israel should try to jump-start the Palestinian economy while continuing its military occupation indefinitely. His message that territorial withdrawals have only brought more violence seems to have resonated ahead of Tuesday's election: Israel just wound up a war against Palestinian militants who increased their rocket attacks after Israel pulled its troops and settlers out of the Gaza Strip in 2005. Something similar happened in 1996, when Israelis elected Netanyahu prime minister after a wave of Hamas suicide bombings originating from areas Israel had transferred to Palestinian control. Netanyahu comes from a prominent Israeli family. His father, Benzion, a historian, was a leading figure among the Likud's nationalist precursors in prestate Israel. Netanyahu's brother, Yoni, was a war hero who died leading a daring 1976 hostage rescue by Israeli commandos in Entebbe, Uganda. That lineage has played an important role in Netanyahu's political life. So, too, has the time he spent in the U.S., where he learned the fluent, American-accented English that has made him a high-profile voice for Israel abroad. Netanyahu, who holds two degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, became Israel's ambassador to the United Nations. Returning home, he ran for parliament on Likud's list in 1988, then swept the party leadership in 1993. In 1996, importing an American political arsenal of sound bites and attack campaigning, he was elected Israel's youngest prime minister in an upset victory over the venerable Shimon Peres. His tenure was marked by disastrous relations with the Palestinians, failed peacemaking with Syria, alienated allies, an inability to rein in an unruly parliament and corruption allegations that didn't stick. Voters threw him out in early elections in 1999. Ten years later, Netanyahu's positions have not changed. His policies seem to lay the ground for a clash with President Barack Obama, who has promised to "aggressively" seek a Mideast peace agreement and has dispatched an envoy critical of Israeli settlement-building. But Netanyahu is no unbending ideologue, like many in his Likud Party. He has been around the Israeli political scene long enough for voters to know his pragmatic _ some say unprincipled _ side. As prime minister, Netanyahu met with the Palestinian guerrilla-turned-statesman Yasser Arafat and ceded part of the West Bank city of Hebron to Palestinian control, enraging the hard-core Israeli settlers who also live there. Despite his current criticism of the Gaza withdrawal, he backed it in several votes in parliament. Questions about his credibility dog the current campaign. One campaign slogan from his main rival, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni of the ruling Kadima party, reads simply, "Bibi? I don't believe him." One of her TV ads had Netanyahu talking as a lie detector graph scribbled away. Netanyahu is capable of agile reinvention depending on his audience, said Israeli political analyst Hanan Crystal. There is the Netanyahu who met Arafat, he said, and the Netanyahu who opened up an archaeological tunnel in Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter in 1996, infuriating Arabs and sparking riots that left dozens dead. "There isn't one Bibi _ there are many Bibis," Crystal said.
