Home  |  News Briefs  |  U.S.  |  World   |  Celeb Buzz  |  Entertainment  |  Sports  |  Business  |  Health  |  Sci / Tech  |  Politics  |  Weird & Offbeat     Obama Pushes Stimulus In Florida As Senate Prepares Final Vote On $838 Billion Bill February 10, 2009 12:34 p.m. EST Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Fort Myers, FL (AHN) - President Barack Obama has just begun speaking about his economic stimulus to residents in Fort Myers, where the unemployment rate has risen from 6 percent to 10 percent since last year. His Tuesday town hall coincides with a final vote in the Senate on the $838 billion plan. Joined by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Obama said, "The situation we face could not be more serious... we simply can't afford to wait and see and hope for the best. We can't afford to posture and bicker and resort to the same failed ideas that got us into this mess... We've had a good debate, but the time for talking is over." The President said his plan includes $1,000 "of badly-needed tax relief" for the middle class, which include 6.9 million workers and their families in Florida. "Most importantly, this plan will put people to work right now by making direct investments in areas like health care, energy, education, and infrastructure; investments that save jobs, create new jobs and new businesses, and help our economy grow again," he added. A final vote on the stimulus was scheduled for noon in the Senate on Tuesday. Lawmakers had voted to limit debate on the legislation the previous day, passing a bipartisan compromise, called the Nelson-Collins amendment, that cuts down the nearly nearly $1 trillion stimulus in size. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the ranking Republican in the Senate Finance Committee, had said in a statement after the amendment was passed, "The bill is a big missed opportunity, especially with the strength of a new president who campaigned to change the ways of Washington...The way this bill was managed with a heavy partisan hand by congressional leaders kept it from being an effective economic stimulus package. Bipartisanship isn't picking off bare minimum support from a few Republicans at the 11th hour." If the Senate passes the stimulus, a conference committee still has to reconcile differences in the House and Senate versions. The House passed its version of the measure, worth $819 billion and without a single Republican vote, two weeks ago. The President began doubling his efforts to have the bill passed on Monday, holding his first press conference and speaking at a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Indiana, where the unemployment rate has risen from 4.7 percent to 15.3 percent in the past year. Later Tuesday, he is scheduled to meet with the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democrats in the House that reportedly sent Democratic leaders a letter last week about concerns on the stimulus. In his press conference, Obama had defended what Republicans have been calling as "wasteful spending" in the stimulus, saying the bill combines tax cuts with direct investments. "We've learned very clearly and conclusively over the last eight years, tax cuts alone can't solve all of our economic problems -- especially tax cuts that are targeted to the wealthiest few Americans. We have tried that strategy time and time again, and it's only helped lead us to the crisis we face right now," he said. Obama is scheduled to leave Fort Myers at 2:45 pm ET for Andrews Air Force Base. He is expected to arrive at the White House at 5:00 pm ET, about an hour before he meets with the Blue Dogs in the State Dining Room.
