Wellington, FL, United States (AHN) - A witness has told police that polo mogul John Goodman was looking for cocaine shortly before the vehicle he was driving allegedly collided with another car, killing the other driver, a recent college graduate.
The woman said Goodman, 46, asked her to leave a bar with him to get the drug. She declined and reportedly he drove off alone minutes before he blew through a stop sign at 63 mph and killed Scott Wilson, 23.
It remains unknown where Goodman was heading when he got into the Feb. 11 accident. Police noted that he had already passed his house when the accident occurred.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Goodman was in a black Bentley convertible shortly after 1 a.m. Feb. 12 when he ran a stop sign and collided with Wilson's Hyundai Sonata. Goodman, who is founder of Wellington's International Polo Club Palm Beach, refused to speak to police after the accident and reportedly hesitated calling police.
Authorities said Goodman was found nearly a quarter-mile away at a trailer where he had tried to call for help.
Goodman's blood alcohol level was later tested and found to be at .177 percent, well over the .08 legal limit.
Wilson, a recent graduate from the University of Central Florida, was driving from Orlando to his mother's house in Wellington. The crash caused his Hyundai to roll upside down into a canal. Wilson died from drowning, according to reports from the county medical examiner. Police said Goodman left Wilson to die.
Numerous witnesses said Goodman spent the night of Feb. 11 drinking and partying in high style.
In May, Goodman was charged with DUI manslaughter with failure to render aid and vehicular homicide with failure to render aid.
