Apple iPhone 4 has Samsung and Micron chips: report
TOKYO/LOS ANGELES - Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> hot-selling next-generation iPhone sports chips from Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, Micron Technology <MU.O> and STMicroelectronics <STM.PA>, according to an early teardown, or disassembly analysis by technology firm iFixit. The well-reviewed iPhone 4 goes on sale on Thursday in five of the world's biggest economies -- China and its guarded telecoms sector being a notable exception -- and consumers hoping to score the device are expected to throng stores.
Apple's new iPhone approaches as iPad surprises again
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> has sold 3 million iPads in less than three months, a faster-than-expected pace that boosted its stock days before the company's newest iPhone hits store shelves. Several brokerages, including Kaufman Bros and UBS, raised their estimates on Apple's earnings or revenue on Tuesday. Shares in the company, which starts selling the iPhone 4 in the five of the world's six largest economies on Thursday, shot up as much as 2.1 percent before ending the day up 1.4 percent.
FCC OKs AT&T buy of assets from Verizon
NEW YORK - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday approved Verizon Wireless's $2.35 billion wireless spectrum license sale to AT&T Inc <T.N>. Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc <VZ.N> and Vodafone Group Plc <VOD.L>, is selling the assets as a condition for regulatory approval of its own purchase in January last year of rural provider Alltel.
"Shark Tank" to return -- for one episode
LOS ANGELES - Mark Burnett's "Shark Tank" will return to ABC this summer -- for one episode. The airing is a holdover from last season. The well-regarded, if ratings challenged, reality effort will air Thursday, July 15, at 8 p.m., with "Shark" repeats airing in the following weeks. ABC still has some time before the deadline to decide on a second season; producers have pitched shaking up the panel of sharks by adding a high-profile name or two. So far, however, there's still no official verdict on "Shark Tank" -- or ABC's other altruistic reality effort, "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution."
Russian president to Silicon Valley: Help!
SAN FRANCISCO - IPhone chief Steve Jobs and his tech titan friends take an unusual consulting opportunity on Wednesday: helping Russian President Dmitry Medvedev turn around his creaky economy. Medvedev will make a whirlwind tour of Silicon Valley, the U.S. technology hub he sees as a "quite interesting" model that Russia could follow.
U.S. to target foreign websites in anti-piracy push
WASHINGTON - The United States will go after foreign websites that pirate American music and movies as part of a new strategy to stop sales of counterfeit and pirated goods at home and abroad, Vice President Joe Biden said on Tuesday. "This is theft, clear and simple," Biden said at a meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and other Cabinet officials.
Amazon, Barnes & Noble slash e-reader prices
LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> and Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> reduced prices of their electronic readers on Monday, responding to the threat from Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad tablet computer. Shares in both companies fell about 3 percent as investors feared intense competition could lure away buyers of e-books, the fastest-growing segment in a moribund bookselling industry.
Large study finds no cell phone mast link to cancer
LONDON - British scientists who conducted the largest study yet into cell phone masts and childhood cancers say that living close to a mast does not increase the risk of a pregnant woman's baby developing cancer. In a study looking at almost 7,000 children and patterns of early childhood cancers across Britain, the researchers found that those who developed cancer before the age of five were no more likely to have been born close to a mast than their peers.
Google to launch music service: report
NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is planning to launch an online music downloading service tied to its search engine, the Wall Street Journal reported, a move that would pit it against Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and its popular iTunes site. Google's plans are still vague, but it has been "stepping up conversations" about offering music services online as well as over mobile phones that use its Android operating system, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the company's talks with the music industry.
RIM's new BlackBerry may overshadow quarterly results
TORONTO - Research in Motion <RIM.TO> investors want to know one thing above all when the BlackBerry maker reports quarterly results this week: when will RIM's long-promised iPhone killer finally hit the market? Robust earnings growth and solid sales of more than 11 million devices are unlikely to impress them much. Both are expected, along with further declines in average selling prices, as overseas sales of lower-end devices grow.
