US pop icon Michael Jackson. An Australian TV station apologised for a sketch in which actors daubed in black face paint parodied the Jackson Five musical phenomenon in a stunt that sparked outrage.
SYDNEY (AFP) - – An Australian TV station on Thursday apologised for a sketch in which actors daubed in black face paint parodied the Jackson Five musical phenomenon in a stunt that sparked outrage.
The skit, which aired late Wednesday on variety and talent show "Hey Hey It's Saturday," sparked an angry reaction from viewers and an on-air scolding by the show's celebrity judge, US actor and singer Harry Connick Jr.
The sketch showed a man with a white face and an afro wig impersonating the late pop icon Michael Jackson, while the faces of his back up dancers, depicting the other members of the 1960s group the Jackson Five, were daubed in black paint.
"I feel like I am at home here and if I knew that (the sketch) was going to be part of the show, I probably, I definitely wouldn't have done it," Connick told presenter Daryl Somers live on air.
Somers immediately apologised for the depiction, which would be unthinkable in the United States where "blackface" make-up was once used in black and minstrel shows, now accepted as deeply racist.
"I think we may have offended you with that act and I deeply apologise on behalf of all of us -- because I know that to your countrymen, that's an insult to have a black-face routine like that on the show," Somers told Connick.
"No offence was ever intended by the guys who did the act and certainly not the show," he told Sky News on Thursday.
"So I do apologise to you," the embarrassed-looking and stammering host said.
Following the very public furore, the Nine Network television station that aired the programme was also forced to apologise.
"It was never intended to offend and we regret any offence the ... act caused," said a spokesman for the network.
Connick later told commercial radio that he had been surprised but not upset by the sketch.
"I had no idea I was going to be a part of it," he said. "I have absolutely no hard feelings and I'm not even upset, but I felt I had a responsibility to respond."
