Tokyo stocks soar more than four percent
AFP - 24 minutes ago
TOKYO (AFP) - - Japan's Nikkei stock index jumped more than four percent early Tuesday on a weaker yen and expectations that the US presidential vote could be a turning point for the handling of the global financial crisis.
The benchmark Nikkei-225 index rose 364.34 points or 4.25 percent to 8,941.32 in early morning trade.
The Topix index of all first-section issues soared 39.71 points or 4.58 percent to 906.83.
On Wall Street on Monday stocks closed virtually flat in quiet trading ahead of Tuesday's presidential and congressional polls as fresh data underscored economic worries.
Tokyo markets were closed Monday for a public holiday.
