Mideast peace deal unlikely by year's end: White House
AFP - Friday, November 7
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - A Middle East peace deal is unlikely in 2008, the White House said Thursday, acknowledging openly and explicitly for the first time what would be a major diplomatic disappointment.
"We do not think that it's likely that it would happen before the end of the year," US President George W. Bush's chief spokeswoman, Dana Perino, told reporters.
"We realize that, with the political changes that have happened in Israel over the passed couple of months, and really since early summer that that started, that the prospects of being able to get one done became more unlikely," she said.
Her remarks ended any lingering hopes for an accord setting the stage for creating an independent Palestinian state living at peace with Israel, one of Bush's major diplomatic priorities before he leaves office on January 20.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas had revived peace efforts during a US-sponsored conference in Annapolis, Maryland, in November 2007.
"It's important that we maintain momentum for the negotiations," Perino said.
"Over the past year, we have laid some very good ground work for the Palestinians and the Israelis to be able to continue to have their discussions," the spokeswoman said.
