China 3G standard phone sales to surge
HELSINKI will grow 7-fold this year, boosted by China Mobile's <0941.HK> push of new phones and services, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Monday. The research firm did not unveil total sales estimates, but China Mobile, the world's largest mobile operator by subscribers, has said it had 3.4 million clients using its TD-SCDMA network last year when it opened the service.
Sharp says to launch 3D TVs in summer of 2010
TOKYO - Sharp Corp <6753.T> said on Monday that it would launch 3D TVs in Japan this summer. The Japanese electronics maker also said it would start selling 3D TVs in China, the United States and Europe by the end of this year.
Google CEO: Tech silence in China spat no shock
WASHINGTON - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has not been surprised at the lack of public support in Silicon Valley as it faces off with China over hacking and censorship, the company's chief executive Eric Schmidt said on Sunday. "It has gone as we expected," said Schmidt at a meeting of the American Society of News Editors.
Ex-Obama adviser calls on FCC to reclassify Web access: report
NEW YORK - The U.S. could regain its authority to pursue both network neutrality and widespread access to broadband by formally reclassifying Internet access as "telecommunications services," a former adviser to President Obama said in a published report on Sunday. Susan Crawford, who was a special assistant to the President for science, technology and innovation policy, wrote in the New York Times that, before it can reclassify Internet access, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission has to prove "good reason".
Google CEO says Apple helped AdMob deal
WASHINGTON - Apple's <AAPL.O> plunge into the advertising market announced this past week gave Google <GOOG.O> a big boost in arguing for regulators to approve its acquisition of mobile advertising leader AdMob, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said on Sunday. U.S. antitrust enforcers are apparently concerned the AdMob purchase could hurt applications developers, who often sell their apps for very little and make their money by selling advertising space on them.
Smartphone maker Palm is seeking a buyer: report
- Smartphone maker Palm Inc <PALM.O> is looking to sell itself and is seeking bids for the company as early as this week, Bloomberg said, citing three people familiar with the situation. Palm, which makes the Pre and Pixi phones and develops WebOS phone software, is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc <GS.N> and Qatalyst Partners to find a buyer, the agency said.
Nokia buys location technology firm MetaCarta
HELSINKI - The world's largest cellphone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> said on Friday it had bought U.S. geographic technology firm MetaCarta, as a part of its strategy to offer local navigation services to its customers. It did not disclose the deal price, but said the Massachusetts-based company employed more than 30 people.
Apple unveils iAd platform; iPad sales look strong
CUPERTINO, California - Apple CEO Steve Jobs showed off a new smartphone operating system on Thursday that features an advertising platform to compete with Google's, and revealed stronger-than-expected sales of 450,000 units for the iPad. The iPhone 4.0 software will be available on Apple's <AAPL.O> hugely popular smartphone this summer, complete with a number of upgrades, including a long-awaited multi-tasking capability that allows the use of several applications at once.
Teen suicide puts spotlight on high-tech bullying
BOSTON - The case of a teenager in Massachusetts who killed herself after a relentless, months-long bullying campaign shows how the common schoolyard behavior is evolving in dangerous new ways online. Six students face felony charges in the death of Phoebe Prince, 15, who hanged herself in January after being subjected to verbal assault and threats of physical harm. Some harassment occurred online on Facebook, in text messages and in other high-tech forms, a contemporary development in the age-old practice, experts said.
Microsoft's latest phone experiment
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> will show off its latest mobile phones on Monday, but don't expect a direct rival to the iPhone. The world's largest software company is trying a new tack in the hotly contested arena with its long-awaited "Project Pink" devices.
