Apple, AT&T overwhelmed by iPhone pre-orders

WASHINGTON (AFP) - – Apple and AT&T began accepting pre-orders Tuesday for the new iPhone but the process was reportedly plagued by technical glitches amid heavy demand.
Various US technology blogs reported that the Apple and AT&T websites were overwhelmed by requests for the iPhone 4, which goes on sale in stores on June 24 but was available for pre-order starting on Tuesday.
A number of customers who tried to order a new iPhone online said they had received error messages which read "There was a problem with your request" or "Your request couldn't be processed. Please try again later."
Micro-blogging service Twitter became an outlet for many iPhone buyers to vent their frustration.
"Ordering an iPhone is now as frustrating and unreliable as making calls on one," said Twitter user Jeffrey Kalmikoff in a crack about AT&T's network.
AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the United States.
Technology blog Engadget.com said it had received "hundreds of tips" that iPhone 4 pre-orders were not going through and AT&T's servers were overloaded.
"Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees aren't even able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed," Engadget said.
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPhone earlier this month. It features video chat, can shoot and edit high-definition quality video and has a crisper resolution screen.
The iPhone 4 goes on sale on June 24 in Britain, France, Germany, Japan and the United States and will cost 199 dollars for the 16 gigabyte model and 299 dollars for the 32GB version.
The touchscreen smartphone, which comes in black and white versions, will be available in 18 other countries in July and 24 more in August.
Apple, meanwhile, launched a new application for the Apple Store on Tuesday which allows US customers to purchase Apple products, including the new iPhone 4, directly from their iPhone or iPod Touch.
The Apple Store application is a free download from Apple's App Store.
