ADVERTISEMENT Mujeeb Ahmad, 46, called out his innocence to reporters after he was taken from the courthouse in this southern Indian city, saying the prosecution was politically motivated and laying blame on Asaduddin Owaisi, a powerful member of parliament who heads a mainstream Muslim political party. "Let the police make arrangements for the security of the family of the MP," he shouted in an apparent threat of revenge. Mujeeb Ahmad was arrested in 2005 after police stopped a truck heading from Kashmir to Hyderabad. Hidden amid the truck's load of marble were three assault rifles, 220 rounds of ammunition and explosive detonators. The weaponry, investigators said, was being taken to Ahmad, a Hyderabad-based member of Hizbul Mujahedeen, a Muslim militant group that has long fought against Indian rule over Kashmir. Police said he was trying to form a new militant organization in southern India. Six of Ahmad's associates, including the driver of the truck, were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment each. Ahmad has a long history with Indian authorities. In 1992, a police officer was killed during a raid on Ahmad's home, where authorities were searching for weapons. Ahmad was sentenced to life in prison for that death, but was freed in 2004. The Himalayan region of Kashmir is split between India and Pakistan but claimed in full by both. The only majority Muslim state in overwhelmingly Hindu India, Kashmir has been torn by violence since 1989 when separatists began fighting for independence from New Delhi or a merger with Pakistan. The conflict has killed more than 68,000 people, most of them civilians.
