Spielberg takes on Crichton's "Pirate Latitudes"
LOS ANGELES - It's a 7-year-old boy's dream team -- Steven Spielberg, Michael Crichton and David Koepp moving on from rampaging dinosaurs to marauding pirates. DreamWorks Studios has acquired the film rights to the action-adventure novel "Pirate Latitudes," which Crichton wrote just before his death in November. Spielberg, who directed Koepp's adaptations of Crichton's "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World," will produce the film and possibly direct.
Court throws out FCC cable ownership limit
WASHINGTON - A U.S. appeals court on Friday threw out a regulation that has limited cable companies to serving up to 30 percent of the country's subscription television market, a big victory for operators like Comcast Corp and Cablevision Corp. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that the Federal Communications Commission's rule, adopted in late 2007, was arbitrary and capricious and vacated it. The regulation was first set in 1993 but has been repeatedly challenged.
"Mona Lisa" comes to life in high-tech art exhibit
BEIJING - For centuries, Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" and her enigmatic smile have inspired as much speculation as admiration. Now she's ready to answer questions -- in Mandarin. A digital, interactive version of the renowned 16th century painting is one of 61 high-tech replicas breathing life into classical and ancient art works in the "World Classic Interactive Arts Exhibition" which opened in Beijing last week.
Jeremy Piven cleared in Broadway sushi dispute
LOS ANGELES - Labor group Actors' Equity said on Thursday an arbitrator has cleared actor Jeremy Piven of wrongdoing in a dispute with producers of Broadway play "Speed the Plow," who were upset when he left the show complaining of mercury poisoning from eating too much sushi. A representative for Piven said the arbitrator's decision was based on medical testimony from doctors, and that the actor spent three days in a hospital as a result of his condition.
Black Eyed Peas, Miley Cyrus lead U.S. singles chart
LOS ANGELES - The Black Eyed Peas extended their unprecedented run at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart to 21 weeks on Thursday, while Miley Cyrus kept partying at No. 2. The hip-hop group led the field with "I Gotta Feeling," whose eight-week reign directly followed a 13-week run by "Boom Boom Pow," both tracks from its chart-topping album "The E.N.D." The one-two punch last week broke Usher's record from 2004, when "Yeah!" and "Burn" were No. 1 for a total of 19 consecutive weeks.
TV pitchman Trudeau has FTC fine, ban thrown out
NEW YORK - A federal appeals court has thrown out a $37.6 million fine and three-year infomercial ban against Kevin Trudeau, who has long battled regulators over his marketing of "cures" for obesity, disease and financial woe. Thursday's ruling by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago sends back to a lower court a case accusing the TV pitchman of misleading marketing that violated his 2004 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.
Just a Minute With: Tim Gunn of "Project Runway"
LOS ANGELES - Tim Gunn, fashion guru and urbane mentor to the budding designers on TV's "Project Runway", was forced to swap his impeccable tailored look for something more casual when the fashion reality show moved from New York to laid-back Los Angeles this season. So with the show finally underway on U.S. TV again after a legal hiatus of almost a year, look out for Gunn dressed in -- flip-flops?!
Laura Linney to star in cancer comedy on TV
LOS ANGELES - Oscar nominee Laura Linney will star as a cancer-stricken woman in a new television series on cable network Showtime, playing a suburban mom whose life changes when she learns she has "The C Word," the network said on Thursday. Linney, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 2007 movie "The Savages," will also executive produce the program, titled "The C Word," which is being billed as a half-hour comedy. An air date has not yet been set.
Death Cab For Cutie scores lead "New Moon" single
NEW YORK - Death Cab For Cutie has scored the lead-single spot on the soundtrack for "New Moon," the upcoming second installment of the "Twilight" vampire series. "Meet Me On the Equinox," a song written specifically for the movie by the Grammy-nominated indie rock band, will be unveiled September 13 on MTV's Web site during the cable channel's Video Music Awards broadcast. The entire soundtrack for "New Moon" is set for release on October 20 on Chop Shop/Atlantic Records. The film comes out on November 20.
Time Warner Cable, Verizon to test TV on the Web
NEW YORK - Two more U.S. pay-TV providers, Time Warner Cable Inc and Verizon Communications Inc, plan to test systems to offer shows on the Web to paying customers in a bid to protect their subscription revenue. Time Warner Cable and Verizon separately announced their plans on Thursday and will follow Comcast Corp, the largest U.S. cable operator, which said in July it would test a Web TV service with some of its customers.
