Israelis warned of online spy threat
AFP - Wednesday, May 20
JERUSALEM (AFP) - - Israel's Shin Beth internal security service has warned that "terrorists" are using Facebook and other Internet social networking websites to recruit Israelis and gather secret data.

"Terrorist organisations actively scan Israeli sites, as well as social networks in which many Israelis are active... in order to gather classified information on security targets," it warned in a statement on its own website.
It said that in one recent incident, an Israeli alerted Shin Beth that a man claiming to be a Lebanese merchant had contacted him on Facebook and offered cash in return for classified information.
Shin Beth said it feared not just "the leak of classified information but also the risk of Israeli citizens being lured to meetings abroad, with the promise of generous remuneration, in order to abduct them and move them to hostile Arab countries."
In recent years several Israelis have been recruited over the Internet in this way, arrested and tried, it said.
Shin Beth warned Israelis to be wary of suspicious online approaches and to avoid revealing their phone numbers, email addresses or other personal information.
