(AHN) - Embattled Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele speaks about the future of the GOP on Tuesday during the RNC state chairman's meeting in Maryland. Less than four months into his tenure, Steele is facing continued criticisms from his own party, about statements such as those on abortion, his use of funds and hiring of friends. "The era of apologizing for Republican mistakes of the past is now officially over. It is done... We have turned the page, we have turned the corner." Steele will say during the special meeting that begins at 1:00 pm, according to CBS. "From this point forward, we will focus all of our energies on winning the future." "Candidate Obama was very moderate in his views, but President Obama could not possibly be further to the far left... We are going to take this President on with class, we are going to take this President on with dignity. This will be a very sharp and marked contrast to the shabby and classless way that the Democrats and the far left spoke of the last President," he will also say. Steele also penned an op-ed in Politico the same day saying, "Republicans have engaged in some healthy soul-searching since Election Day, trying to come to grips with our minority status and debating the best way forward... the Republican Party will seize upon momentum for a GOP resurgence that is already under way in states and local communities." "For Reagan's conservatism to take root in the next generation we must offer genuine solutions that are relevant to this age," he added. Committee members are scheduled to vote on Wednesday on several resolutions, including one that will reduce Steele's control over the party's funds. Another resolution urges Democrats to call their party the "Democrat Socialist Party." Steele had said on NBC's Meet the Press over the weekend that he is against the resolution. "I don't get into the name-calling... I've been very clear that I don't think that that is an appropriate way to, to express our views on the issues of the day," he had said. Some Republicans are also concerned about Steele's appointment of friends, according to the Washington Times. The chairman had brought with him his personal assistant Belinda Cook and is paying her three times as much as her predecessor earned, and the secretary's son, was also accepted for a job at the RNC. Steele has been under fire since being elected late January, when he announced that he would bring the GOP to "hip-hop settings" and called Rush Limbaugh an "entertainer" who had an "incendiary" program. He subsequently apologized to Limbaugh, which led Democrats to call the radio host the de facto Republican leader. Not long after he had to backpedal on a statement about abortion being "an individual choice." The first black RNC head, Steele faced calls for his resignation as early as five weeks into his chairmanship. He has the crucial role of leading a party back to victory after losing control for the first time of both Congress and the White House in 15 years. His new approach includes "reach[ing] everybody" including the black urban community, as well as transforming the GOP into a party of "online political users." He had, however, failed the first test of his leadership whe the GOP conceded defeat in the the special election in New York's 20th congressional district in March.
