Taiwan's statistics agency is due to release its economic report on Thursday, with economists expecting the tech-reliant economy to contract by an annual 9.2 percent in the first quarter, the worst since records began in 1962. [ID:nTP28614] "Our economy will start to show some improvement in the third quarter onwards, though we'll still see an economic contraction for the full year," Premier Liu Chao-shiuan, who heads the cabinet, told a news conference. Liu added that the economy will start logging annual expansions again in the fourth quarter and the first quarter of 2010, in line with estimates by other government officials and market expectations. He did not provide any specific figure. In the last economic report in February, the statistics agency said Taiwan's tech-reliant economy will likely log annual falls from the third quarter of last year to the third quarter of 2009, which would be the longest recession the island has ever experienced. The agency, which has not provided any estimates for 2010 data, forecast in February Taiwan's gross domestic product to expand by an annual 4.5 percent in the fourth quarter. For the full year of 2009, the agency expects the near $400-billion economy shrinking by a record 3 percent. [ID:nTP251280] Earlier in the day, President Ma Ying-jeou said Taiwan's unadjusted jobless rate would rise in coming months, though it will not go above 6 percent, as graduates flock into the job market. "We expect our jobs situation to improve in the second half of the year," Ma told a news conference commemorating his first anniversary in office. In March, Taiwan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose to a record 5.72 percent, while the unadjusted rate was 5.81 percent.
