ADVERTISEMENT "We've finally achieved it. I've fought for it for the past two years. Now Vienna has what no other opera house has," director Ioan Holender told a news conference. Every season during the months of May and June as well as September and October selected performances will be transmitted live and direct onto a 50 square-metre LED video screen on the Herbert-von-Karajan square adjacent to the opera house. "The idea is to win over people, tourists and Viennese alike who aren't otherwise opera fans, to opera," Holender said. "It's not for dyed-in-the-wool opera fans, but those who wouldn't otherwise venture into an opera house. We aim to awaken their interest." In Germany, Munich's opera house regularly has "Opera for All" events where single operas are broadcast live on a giant screen during the city's summer opera festival. But Vienna will the first house to organise such showings on a regular or "semi-permanent" basis, with 50 to 60 screenings planned each season, Holender said. The very first screening will take place on Sunday with a broadcast of Jules Massenet's "Werther". And marking the opera house's 140th birthday on Monday, there will also be a screening of a gala performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni". The current building that houses the Vienna State Opera opened its doors on the city's famous Ring road on May 25, 1869 -- likewise with a performance of "Don Giovanni". The performance on Monday -- boasting a stellar cast including Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski, Italian bass-baritone Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, German bass Rene Pape and Austrian tenor Michael Schade -- marks the 876th performance of the work at the State Opera. During the interval, the Austrian post office will unveil a special commemorative postage stamp and at the State Opera Museum, a block away, a special new 140th anniversary exhibition will open.
