'Four Christmases' tops record holiday box office charts
AFP - Tuesday, December 2
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - - Romantic comedy "Four Christmases" jingled all the way to a big box office victory over the US Thanksgiving weekend for its North American debut, final figures showed Monday.
Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, playing a couple struggling to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas, brought the seasonal feature 31.1 million dollars over the three-day weekend, according to industry monitor Exhibitor Relations.
Disney's animated "Bolt," about a dog who believes in his fictional superhero powers, barked up to a second place with 26.6 million dollars, just ahead of the teen vampire film "Twilight," at 26.3 million dollars.
The top 12 films grossed 154.8 million dollars, more than twice the amount in the same period last year.
In fourth place, James Bond thriller "Quantum of Solace" made 18.8 million dollars.
"Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa," which came in sixth place over the weekend, raked in the most total ticket sales since its debut four weeks ago, with 159 million dollars. The sequel to the popular 2005 animated film features Chris Rock and Ben Stiller as the voices for escaped zoo animals.
"Australia," featuring Nicole Kidman as an English aristocrat who inherits a large ranch during World War II, racked up 14.8 million, while "Transporter 3" earned 12.1 million.
In eighth place, "Role Models" brought in 5.19 million dollars, followed by "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" at 1.7 million.
Gus Van Sant's "Milk" rounded up the top ten in its debut weekend with 1.45 million in ticket sales.
