South Korean export growth seen halving in 2009
Reuters - 59 minutes ago
SEOUL, Dec 1 - South Korea's export growth is expected to almost halve next year as a global recession takes a toll on overseas demand for goods from Asia's fourth-largest economy, a state agency said on Monday.
The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency said in a statement that its survey of 655 local and overseas companies forecast exports in 2009 would rise 10.3 percent, compared to a 19.7 percent gain expected this year.
"A global economic recession is expected to cast a shadow on our exports," the agency said.
The government expects exports to rise 15 percent next year after predicted growth of 17.2 in 2008.
KOTRA's forecast came before November trade data due later in the day, which is expected to show the country's exports posted their biggest fall from a year earlier in nearly 7 years.
