Iraq, Iran swap bodies of 1980-88 war dead
AP - 1 hour 13 minutes ago
BAGHDAD - Iraqi and Iranian troops have exchanged the bodies of 241 soldiers killed during an eight-year war between the two countries.
The remains of 200 Iraqis and 41 Iranians were returned to their native countries Sunday during a ceremony at a border checkpoint near the southern Iraqi city of Basra.
It's the first such exchange since Saddam Hussein was overthrown in 2003.
Officials have said only 27 of the Iraqis and seven of the Iranians have been identified.
Hundreds of thousands of soldiers from both sides were killed or went missing during the 1980-1988 war.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has said the two countries have agreed to gather and share information about the missing and hand over any remains uncovered.
