MOH expects total number of HIV cases in 2008 to exceed 2007 figure
Channel NewsAsia - 47 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: The Health Ministry (MOH) said the total number of HIV cases for the whole of this year will exceed that of last year.
In the first ten months of 2008, there were 382 new HIV cases reported among Singapore residents. In comparison, 423 HIV cases were recorded for the whole of 2007.
MOH said the increase in the number of HIV—testing cases could have contributed to the increased number of reported HIV cases.
In the first nine months of the year, 124,559 HIV tests were carried out — this is a 22 per cent jump compared to the same period in 2007 where 102,490 HIV tests were done.
There are also more individuals coming forward for anonymous HIV testing, with 6,983 anonymous HIV tests done in the first eight months of this year — a 4 per cent increase from the same period last year.
Meanwhile, four GP clinics which started offering anonymous HIV testing from November 1 have carried out 175 tests in the first half of the month.
The Health Ministry said it is encouraged by the increased awareness and uptake of HIV testing. It is urging those at risk of HIV infection and those who engage in risky sexual behaviour to go for regular HIV testing.
