3 Mexicans arrested in Australia-U.S. cocaine bust
AP - 1 hour 25 minutes ago
SYDNEY, Australia - Three Mexicans have been arrested on charges of attempting to import millions of dollars worth of cocaine into Australia in a ceramics shipment, the Australian Federal Police said Monday.
The two men and one woman were arrested Friday following a joint investigation by Australian and American law enforcement agencies.
A police statement said the 142 pounds (64 kilograms) of cocaine _ hidden in four concrete cylinders within a shipment of pots, planters and statues _ had an estimated street value of more than 16 million Australian dollars ($10.42 million).
"The disruption of this transnational syndicate is an example of Australian and United States law enforcement agencies working together against the global problem of drug trafficking," said Tim Morris, assistant AFP commissioner. "This seizure has saved the Australian community more than AU$18.7 million ($12 million) in associated health and social costs."
Australian officials were alerted to the coming shipment after U.S. authorities detected cocaine in cargo that had arrived in Los Angeles from Mexico, destined for Melbourne.
U.S. customs and the Australian Federal Police coordinated the transport of the shipment to Australia, replicated the concrete cylinders and monitored the subsequent delivery. AFP officers arrested the three Mexicans _ a 40-year-old and 28-year-old men and a 39-year-old woman _ when they tried to access the goods in a storage facility on Friday.
The maximum penalty for the offenses is life imprisonment and/or a fine of AU$825,000 ($539,000).
