Credit: Reuters/Gil Montano By Frank Jack Daniel and Patricia Rondon CARACAS | Mon Sep 27, 2010 9:36pm EDT CARACAS (Reuters) - President Hugo Chavez and a rejuvenated opposition bloc both claimed victory on Monday in Venezuela's parliamentary election, where challengers dented but did not overturn his Socialist Party's majority. With the popular vote split down the middle, the ballot highlighted the stark polarization of South America's top oil producer. Both camps now have their sights set on the next presidential election in 2012 when the newly-united opposition bloc hopes to unseat the charismatic former soldier. Opposition leaders rejoiced after their candidates won a third of seats in parliament, enough to make the president need their support to change major laws or make appointments to key institutions, like the Supreme Court or electoral commission. But Chavez said he was delighted his party had taken 98 seats in the 165-member National Assembly, compared with 65 for the Democratic Unity umbrella group. He dubbed them the "Far-Right Movement" for their initials in Spanish. "The forces of the revolution won a very important victory," he told reporters, accusing the opposition of misinterpreting the results with the help of biased foreign media. Opposition parties boycotted the last election in 2005, giving Chavez complete control of parliament. The result left the government just shy of the 99 seats -- or three-fifths -- it would need for parliament to give special decree powers to Chavez if he wants to ignore the body. Despite the new optimism among Chavez's foes, his Socialist Party still has formidable control of the OPEC member's political structures and vital oil revenue. Yet losing about half the popular vote was still a symbolic blow for Chavez, who is used to big popular support, during the 12th year of his controversial rule. "It's a clear message: we don't want the government's radical path," opposition leader Julio Borges told Reuters. The Socialist Party won 5.42 million votes in total, Chavez said, slightly more than the 5.32 million for the opposition bloc. That contradicted an earlier claim by Democratic Unity, which said it won 52 percent of all ballots. Though all votes were in, election authorities had not yet published final official vote figures by Monday evening. "They say they won. Well, keep 'winning' then! It suits me," Chavez said, challenging the opposition to call a recall referendum if they believed they now represented the people. "Come for me, here I am!" he said. The Venezuelan leader promised an "acceleration" of his socialist reforms and said an opposition presence in parliament was no threat to his agenda.
