AFP, Xinhua sign three key agreements
BEIJING (AFP) - – Agence France-Presse and China's Xinhua news agency on Tuesday signed three landmark commercial agreements, paving the way for future cooperation in key areas including new media.
AFP's Asia-Pacific director Eric Wishart, Xinhua's deputy general manager Zhang Xiaohua and its director general for foreign affairs Zhou Zongmin signed the accords at the Chinese state news agency's headquarters in Beijing.
Under the accords, Xinhua will sell AFP photos in China and AFP will sell Xinhua photos in key markets outside China including Europe, Africa and the United States.
The agreements provide for an exchange of news wires and how each agency may use the other's copy.
"The agreements form the basis for further cooperation in the new media age," Wishart said. "We see great commercial opportunities for our range of multimedia products in China, and welcome the opportunity to work with Xinhua."
Zhang welcomed the agreements, saying they opened a new era in relations between the two agencies.
The accords -- the product of more than 10 years of negotiations -- replace agreements reached in 1973 on the exchange of news services, and in 1995 on photos.
Based in Paris, AFP is the world's oldest news agency with a global network of more than 2,000 journalists in 165 countries.
