China quake film sets domestic box office record
BEIJING (AFP) - – A film about an earthquake that devastated a Chinese city more than 30 years ago has become the highest-grossing domestic film, raking in 532 million yuan (79 million dollars), state media said Monday.
"Aftershock" -- a tale based on the lives of survivors of the Tangshan earthquake in 1976 -- set the homegrown box office record less than three weeks after its nationwide release, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The movie directed by Feng Xiaogang tells the story of a mother's emotional reunion with her daughter, three decades after a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated the northern city, killing more than 240,000 people.
"Aftershock" has leapfrogged the takings of the patriotic "Founding of a Republic", which made about 420 million yuan after it was released last year to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Communist China, Xinhua said.
"Aftershock", which cost 150 million yuan to make, took in 36.2 million yuan on its first day -- a record for the premiere of a Chinese-made movie, the report said, citing the film's distributors.
Its takings are so far however dwarfed by James Cameron's "Avatar" which became China's all-time box office champion earlier this year, grossing 1.3 billion yuan, state media said previously.
