Eminem and R&B singer Bruno Mars lead Grammy nominees
LOS ANGELES - Rapper Eminem, riding high on the comeback trail after spending several years battling drug addiction, led the field of Grammy contenders on Wednesday with 10 nominations. The 38-year-old hip-hop star will compete for the three big awards of album, song and record of the year, as well as in a host of rap categories.
Marshals order Wesley Snipes to start sentence by December 9
ORLANDO, Florida - The U.S. Marshals Service has ordered actor Wesley Snipes to report to prison in northwest Pennsylvania no later than noon on December 9 to begin serving a 3-year sentence on tax charges, according to a notice filed in the U.S. District Court in Ocala on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges later on Wednesday issued an order denying a pending motion by Snipes to remain free while he appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Johnny Depp driven "nuts" by French language
PARIS - Having trouble with your French conjugations? Struggling to tell masculine from feminine? Fear not. Hollywood's No. 1 francophile, Johnny Depp, is in the same boat. The 47 year-old star may consider France his spiritual home and have Parisian actress and singer Vanessa Paradis as his companion to help, but like so many before him, the subtleties of the Gallic tongue are proving a little frustrating.
Sundance unveils competition films for 2011 festival
LOS ANGELES - The Sundance Film Festival on Wednesday unveiled nearly 60 movies from the United States and around the world that will compete for awards at January's top event for independent movies. Sundance, which is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute for filmmaking, serves as a launching ground for unknown filmmakers and actresses, as well as stars in low-budget movies, and films screening here often become hits in art house theaters in the weeks and months that follow.
Soul icon Solomon Burke earns posthumous Grammy nod
LOS ANGELES - Solomon Burke, the larger-than-life soul legend who died in October, received a Grammy nomination on Wednesday for his final album. Burke was nominated in the contemporary blues category for "Nothing's Impossible," which was released in April, coinciding with his 70th birthday. The only other Grammy win of his five-decade career was in this category in 2003 with "Don't Give Up On Me."
Elton John edits UK newspaper for World AIDS Day
LONDON - British singer/songwriter Elton John has taken time out from touring to edit daily newspaper The Independent on World AIDS Day. Michael Jackson's dad files new wrongful death suit
LOS ANGELES - An attorney for the father of Michael Jackson on Tuesday filed a new wrongful death lawsuit against the doctor accused of involuntary manslaughter in the pop singer's death. The lawsuit by attorney Brian Oxman on behalf of Joe Jackson was filed in California Superior Court against Dr. Conrad Murray and companies with which he is affiliated. It includes the "Thriller" singer's mother Katherine Jackson and his three children as nominal parties.
MTV launches "Me, Myself and HIV" film on AIDS day
LONDON - The head of MTV's AIDS charity was nervous about launching this year's World AIDS Day campaign without a celebrity, but decided to put her faith in two personal tales told by unknown youngsters. The music channel is airing an hour-long television documentary "Me, Myself and HIV," which follows the lives of 25-year-old U.S. college student Angelikah and 21-year-old aspiring musician Slim from Zambia. Both are living with HIV.
CBS revamps low-rated "Early Show," ousts anchors
LOS ANGELES - CBS News' "The Early Show" ousted long-time anchors Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez on Tuesday to rescue the low-rated, third-place finisher among morning talk shows. Starting on January 3, Erica Hill and Chris Wragge, who have been co-anchors of the Saturday morning telecast of "The Early Show" will take the weekday positions of Smith and Rodriguez, CBS News said.
Uma Thurman stalker back in jail
NEW YORK - A man who was previously convicted of stalking actress Uma Thurman and harassing her family for two years was arrested and jailed again last week, police said on Tuesday. Jack Jordan was arrested at his home in Montgomery County, Maryland as he was researching the Oscar-nominated actress on Google, a police spokeswoman said.
