UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A U.S. envoy had a brief chat with Iran's foreign minister on the fate of four Americans held in Iran, during a dinner party the Iranian mission threw for the Security Council, a U.S. official said on Friday.
World
The official said that U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Alejandro Wolff also handed Iranian Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki letters from the families of the detained Americans.
Wolff "did have a chat with Mottaki about the three hikers and (ex-FBI agent) Robert Levinson" on Thursday evening, the U.S. official said.
The three hikers have been detained in Iran since July 2009. Iran said last month it had proof that the three detained on espionage charges had links to intelligence services. Their families said they were hiking and had accidentally strayed across the border from Iraq.
The White House has called for their immediate release.
Levinson went missing in Iran in March 2007. Tehran has said little about his case but U.S. officials say they believe he is also being held in Iran.
The United States has no diplomatic relations with Iran but Wolff attended the dinner at the Iranian ambassador's residence along with other members of the U.N. Security Council. The main topic of discussion at the dinner was Iran's nuclear program.
U.S.-Iranian bilateral conversations are rare.

Never mind that the US government held 5 Iranian diplomats for 2 1/2 years with no charges of any sort with even the Iraqi and Kurdish regional governments demanding their release. The USA thinks that Iran, surrounded by US armies and armadas and threatened on a near daily basis with attack “options” which include the nuclear option, is acting irrationally here in holding three American “Hikers”? And let’s not forget that the US is a country whose major politicians speak routinely of funding covert ops in Iran to destabilize its government. Nope – Iran is being a bad freedom hating country here in holding these poor Americans for no logical or rational reason! But that doesn’t even begin to fathom the bottom of the hypocrisy barrel.

IF IT IS ABOUT IRAN AND NON PROLIFERATION TREATY THEN WHY DOES ISRAEL PUSH US FOR IRAN’S SANCTION, BOYCOTT IRAN OR WILL ATTACK IRAN WHILE ISRAEL ITSELF IS NOT A MEMBER OF THE TREATY ? ISRAEL HAS THREATENED TO SEND SYRIA BACK TO STONE AGE THEN SHOULD SYRIA STRIKE ISRAEL FIRST ? THE WHOLE THING IS NONSENSE THATS WHY US IS INCONSISTENT, DOUBLE STANDARD, NOT TRUSTWORTHY.
THERE IS NO SINGLE CREDITABLE EVIDENCE THAT IRAN FLOUTS THE NPT RULES OR DEVELOPES NUKES AND NO CREDIABLE CONFIDENCE. AS A RESULT, IMPARTIAL JURY WILL DEADLOCK, NO SANCTION !
