Edmonton, Canada (AHN) - The world's largest beaver dam on record at 2,788 feet long, is located in a Canadian national park and continues to expand after 35 years of construction.
Staff of the Wood Buffalo National Park released Wednesday photos of the dam, which is equivalent to eight football fields.
Park officials were unaware of the dam until the journalists asked them if they could visit it. The journalists, who were filming a documentary of wolves in the park, pointed them to environmental scientist Jean Thie’s website, where information about the dam is posted.
Thie discovered the dam in a satellite map in 2007 and started measuring it as a hobby. He quietly posted his research on his website.
A beaver dam ordinarily measures 328 feet long, according to Thie.
Beaver scientist and Boston University natural science professor Peter Busher said the dam remains unfinished because beavers continue to build dam as long as there is no natural impediment. The dam creates a pond or lake from where they can access their food, according to Busher.
