Nokia broadens legal row with Apple to include iPad
HELSINKI - Nokia Oyj, the world's top handset maker, broadened its patent fight with Apple Inc on Friday to include the iPad, deepening the bitter legal disputes between the two smartphone rivals. The firms turned to the courts in the last year as Nokia battles Apple, which only entered the cellphone business in 2007, but has taken a sizeable share of the fat-margined, fast-growing smartphone market.
IPad's international launch slated for May 28
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> said on Friday it will launch the iPad tablet computer in nine international markets on May 28, following a strong debut in the United States last month. The iPad will go on sale in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and Britain. Pre-ordering for those markets will start on May 10.
Borders takes orders for Kobo eReader due in June
CHICAGO - Borders Group Inc <BGP.N> said on Friday that it is taking pre-orders for the Kobo eReader, which will arrive in customers' homes starting on June 17, and plans to launch its eBook store in June. Borders also said it plans to designate "Area-e" shops inside its stores to sell the Kobo eReader and other eReading devices starting in August.
Shoe fans aTwitter in dash for Jimmy Choos
LONDON - Shoe lovers in London have been glued to their mobile devices and computer screens in a race to win a pair of free Jimmy Choos. The Jimmy Choo trainer hunt or "CatchAchoo" race offers the winner the chance to keep a free pair of the shoes so loved by celebrities if they can figure out where they are in London according to clues left on social networking sites Twitter, Facebook and foursquare.com.
FCC chief promises light broadband touch
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - The top communications regulator sought to calm fears his agency would heavily regulate Internet services, but shares in major cable companies fell and industry insiders predicted a prolonged legal battle. The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission issued a statement on Thursday pledging to retain a light touch with Internet regulation, after a court ruling last month threw into doubt the agency's authority over broadband.
Concert promoters embrace new media for fan services
DENVER State University, 24-year-old Alex Rude decided to try his hand at iPhone application development by creating a scheduling app for that summer's Vans Warped tour, which he was planning to attend for the fifth year.
BP turns to Twitter, Facebook on spill information
HOUSTON - Phone lines at the command center where teams are directing clean-up of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill are often jammed, but media-savvy fishermen, residents and others can find the latest updates on Twitter and Facebook. News that the massive containment dome to be placed over one of the leaks had arrived above the leak off the Louisiana shore appeared first on the popular social media sites. So did word that controlled burns of the oil slick would go ahead on Wednesday after a week of bad weather.
AMD chips to be in many more computers this summer-sources
SAN FRANCISCO - Advanced Micro Devices Inc <AMD.N> may make some of its largest inroads into the fast-growing laptop computer market thanks to a new generation of power-efficient chips to be unveiled next week. People familiar with the matter who work for AMD said the company's latest microprocessors are expected to be included in 109 mainstream laptop models in the coming months, the company's best showing during the crucial back-to-school sales season. Last year, AMD's chips were available in 40 laptop models.
Facebook privacy snafu exposed user chats
SAN FRANCISCO - Private chats between some Facebook users were briefly viewable by other users on Wednesday, an embarrassing technical glitch for a company facing growing criticism over "sloppy" privacy protection. Techcrunch, a blog, first reported a bug related to a feature on the fast-growing social network site that allows a user to see how their profile will appear to other users.
Sprint to unveil new text-centric cell plan
NEW YORK - Starting next week Sprint Nextel Corp's <S.N> Virgin unit will sell a new cellphone service plan to cater for the increasing number of young people who prefer to use their phone for text messaging rather than talking. While most U.S. cellphone plans center around voice services and include data as an extra and often pricey frill, Sprint's Beyond Talk offer promises unlimited texting and Web surfing for $25 a month but limits phone calls to 300 minutes a month.
