Tennis star Ivanovic heads for Bali after splitting with coach

BALI, Indonesia (AFP) - – Former French Open winner Ana Ivanovic will be without coach Heinz Gunthardt at this week's Bali Tournament of Champions after an apparent scheduling clash ended her 10-month relationship with the Swiss.

Gunthardt, mentor in the 1990s to Steffi Graf, had been with Ivanovic since February and had helped the Serb raise her ranking from 65th to 24th.

Ivanovic, number one briefly in spring 2008, is the marquee name in the eight-woman field at the year-end championship for the 2010 winners of WTA International-level titles.

Others who will play when the round-robin begins Thursday are 40-year-old wild card Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan, Daniela Hantuchova, China's Li Na, 2009 winner Aravane Rezai of France, Russians Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Alisa Kleybanova and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Gunthardt's job with Swiss-German television means he is unable to travel to Bali during the week when the Swiss Indoors, Roger Federer's home event, is being held.

Ivanovic said in a statement that while she thanked Gunthardt for his help -- last month in Linz she won her first title in two years -- she now needed someone full-time.

"I'm very grateful to Heinz for all his hard work, and for sharing his knowledge with me," Ivanovic said. "We had nice success together and we definitely made improvements to my game.

"Looking ahead, I really need a full-time coach who is with me at all tournaments and during training periods. Heinz has family and other obligations, which I fully respect, so he is unable to give me the kind of commitment I am looking for."

Gunthardt, who coached Graf to 12 of her 22 Grand Slam titles, agreed with the assessment, adding that it had been "a real pleasure working with Ana."

"She's got lots of talent and I feel in the last few months the hard work that we have put in started to pay off," he said.

"If Ana feels she needs a coach at her side full-time to be able to further improve, it cannot be me. I wish her all the best and I will be supporting her."

Early arrivals in Bali had the chance for a surfing lesson on the beach of their resort hotel in the posh Nusa Dua area.

Wickmayer, Pavlyuchenkova and Kleybanova took instruction from a local professional before giving it a go for the cameras with Wickmayer, from landlocked Belgium, finding it "a magnificent experience."
