Google gaining on booming smartphone market
HELSINKI - Google's <GOOG.O> Android software platform rose to No. 2 spot globally on the booming smartphone market in the third quarter, research firm Canalys said on Monday. Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> Symbian continued to lead the market with a 37 percent share, while Android had 17 percent of the market. It has surpassed Research In Motion <RIM.TO><RIMM.O>, Apple <AAPL.O> and Microsoft <MSFT.O> this year.
Oracle-SAP testimony nears, HP CEO might appear
OAKLAND, California - Jury selection has kicked off in a Silicon Valley legal drama that could make for some of the best theater the technology industry has seen in years. Larry Ellison, the co-founder and CEO of software company Oracle Corp <ORCL.O>, has waited 2-1/2 years to bring archrival SAP AG <SAPG.DE> to court on allegations that SAP stole Oracle's software and resold the technology at bargain-basement prices.
Search engine Blekko to rely on the human touch
SAN FRANCISCO - A small Silicon Valley company with some big name backers will release a test version of a new search engine that the company says has a key ingredient that is missing from Google <GOOG.O>, the human touch. According to Blekko, the Web has increasingly become saturated with spam-like websites, specially designed to pop up in Google's search results but whose content is heavier on marketing pitches than substantive information.
Apple sues Motorola, further escalating cellphone wars
NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> sued rival Motorola Inc <MOT.N>, claiming the Droid smartphone maker infringes on three iPhone patents. Cupertino, California-based Apple says Motorola is purposefully using its touchscreen software, as well as other display technologies.
U.S. online spending rose 9 percent in Q3: comScore
SAN FRANCISCO - U.S. online spending rose 9 percent to $32.1 billion in the third quarter, market research firm comScore <SCOR.O> said on Monday. It was the fourth straight quarter of year-over-year growth following the U.S. economic downturn, comScore said.
Google Earth and iPhone trouble Israeli security chief
TEL AVIV - Civilian Internet applications now offer militant groups access to intelligence that rivals what government spies can get, Israel's domestic security chief said on Monday. Shin Bet director Yuval Diskin, in a rare public address, identified cyber technologies as an ascendant international security threat.
Intel manufactures cutting-edge chips for startup firm
SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp will make microchips for small design firm Achronix Semiconductor Corp, the first time the world's largest chip maker is sharing its cutting-edge manufacturing technology with another company. Intel has agreed to make Achronix's field-programmable gate array chips, or FPGAs, using its 22-nanometer process, which is expected to go into production in the second half of next year, Intel spokesman Bill Kircos said in a blogpost.
Microsoft pledges support for Russian tech hub
MOSCOW - Microsoft on Monday pledged millions of dollars to support Russia's plan to create a Silicon Valley-style technology hub outside Moscow as it hunts growth opportunities in the underdeveloped market. Skolkovo, set up as an environment to help fledgling companies in high-tech industries, was launched earlier this year as part of President Dmitry Medvedev's drive to modernize the oil and gas-dependent Russian economy.
DNA barcoding aims to protect species and food
TORONTO - Call it a DNA digital Dewey Decimal System for all life on Earth. Every species, from extinct to thriving, is set to get its own DNA barcode in an attempt to better track the ones that are endangered, as well as those being shipped across international borders as food or consumer products.
