Former President Kirchner, 60, was Argentina's most powerful politician and a leading contender for next year's presidential election. Fernandez, thanked supporters who queued for hours to catch a glimpse of Kirchner's coffin during a two-day wake at the presidential palace and vowed to respect her husband's legacy. "I've read or heard people say that this is the most difficult moment of my life. But really it's something different. It's the most painful moment of my life," said Fernandez, dressed in black and near tears at the end of her televised address. Fernandez, who could run for office again, made no mention of whether she would maintain the same interventionist economic policies that she and her husband, who governed from 2003 to 2007, have pursued but she promised "to honor his government, which changed the country." Many Argentines credit Kirchner with putting the country back on its feet after a deep crisis in 2001-2002, but investors reviled his combative style and measures that increased state control over the economy. Argentine stock and bond prices surged after Kirchner died of a heart attack at his country home in Patagonia, betting that his sudden departure increased the possibility of a more investor-friendly shift in Latin America's No. 3 economy. Cabinet chief Anibal Fernandez said soon after the president spoke: "Nothing's changed, the president doesn't need to change." "On the contrary, we need to go further with (current policy)," he told reporters. President Fernandez canceled planned visits to Vietnam and South Korea, but will still attend a November 11-12 summit of the G20 countries in Seoul as scheduled, the government said.
