The board member's comments on Tuesday may reinforce market expectations of an interest rate hike at the Nov. 16 policy meeting, after annual consumer inflation shot up to a 20-month peak of 4.1 percent in October, topping the central bank's target band of 2-4 percent. [ID:nSUL000179] "It may stoke inflation expectations, and prices tend not to move down once they turn up," the board member, who declined to be named, told Reuters, referring to the inflation figures that were due in large part to food prices. When asked if foreign exchange rates would make it difficult to raise interest rates, the board member played down the suggestion, saying that reflected an "old way" of thinking. "The South Korean currency has been one of the biggest underperformers among emerging Asian countries since the end of last year, excluding China," he said. The Bank of Korea defied market expectations by holding its policy rate <KROCRT=ECI> steady at 2.25 percent for a third straight month in October, citing volatile currency markets. [ID:nTOE69D022] The October rate decision was not unanimous, Bank of Korea Governor Kim Choong-soo said, indicating a debate about the influence of inflationary risks and concerns about heavy inflows into emerging markets. [ID:nTOE69P065] Minutes of the Sept. 9 policy meeting showed two members of the central bank's six-strong board had voted for a 25-basis-point hike. Strong export growth last month also raised the prospect that the Bank of Korea would resume a normalisation of monetary policy that started in July with a 25-basis-point rate hike, analysts said. The front-end treasury futures <KTBc1> wiped out earlier gains to turn 0.10 points lower as of 0611 GMT, after Australia's central bank surprised markets by raising its key cash rate to a two-year high. A Seoul-based bond trader said Australia's rate move seemed to raise the odds that South Korea would follow suit this month.
