ADVERTISEMENT The owner of a local newspaper in Zahedan also told AFP that 10 people had been killed in violence that flared after the bombing of a Shiite mosque last week that left 25 dead. "During the unrest, 20 to 30 people were arrested," judiciary spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters in Tehran. Mohammad Taghi Rakhshani, owner of the local newspaper which shares its name with the city, said 10 people were killed in street clashes and an arson attack on a local bank building. Iran has been shaken by a spate of violent incidents in the run-up to the June 12 presidential election, where incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is facing challenges from three rival candidates. Rakhshani said the five employees killed when the local subsidiary of financial company Mehr Financial was set ablaze on Monday were members of Iran's dominant Shiite community. "The other five who were killed in other skirmishes were Sunnis," he said. Jamshidi confirmed the death of six people, saying they were "burnt to death" but gave no further details. Rakhshani said life in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, had returned to normal on Tuesday after appeals by local leaders of Sunni and Shiite communities. "Until Monday, groups of 20 to 30 people were seen gathering at several places, but today all the shops and local government offices are open and life is back to normal," Rakhshani said. Thursday's mosque bombing in the city was claimed by a shadowy Iranian Sunni insurgent group called Jundallah (Soldiers of God), according to a US group that monitors Islamist websites. SITE Intelligence quoted a Jundallah statement as saying the attack was to avenge the hanging last year of members of the Baluch minority that adheres to Sunni Islam and makes up a significant part of the Sistan-Baluchestan population.
