ADVERTISEMENT Speaking at a packed women's rally in Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) stadium, he said it was Iran's strategy "resistance" that was now being praised by other nations. "If I get elected, I will go to the UN and tell the nations there who dare to threaten Iran ... hold your hands up," the hardliner said as women, most of them dressed in black chadors, shouted "Ahmadi! Ahmadi! We support you. Long live the future president!" Ahmadinejad said that when he was elected four years ago, Iran was lumped along with North Korea and Iraq as "axis of evil" by then US president George W. Bush. But "due to your resistance, Iran is now a nuclear nation" and a nation with "space" technology. Under Ahmadinejad, Iran's relations with world powers led by Washington have deteriorated over Tehran's defiance to continue with the controversial uranium enrichment programme. Global powers suspect Iran's uranium enrichment drive is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran vehemently denies. Ahmadinejad, known for his conservative views on women's issues, told the gathering of around 12,000 women that he owed his success to three women -- his mother, his teacher and his wife. "I will vote for Ahmadinejad," Malihe Sadat Azimi, 20, who attended the rally told AFP. "He is the most courageous president and our nation has progressed under his presidency." Maryam Bagheri, 21, voted for Ahmadinejad in 2005 and indicated that this time he was also her choice as Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had implicity backed him. She said Khamenei had given "signs of his support" to a government "that resembles Ahmadinejad's government," referring to a speech last month in the province of Kordestan. Khamenei urged voters to elect a president who has a "modest" lifestyle, in an apparent reference to Ahmadinejad, who is known for his simple ways. Bagheri said "his government is more flawless than the others. He has worked for both women and men. The nuclear energy is for both men and women of this nation." But some of the women at the rally claimed they were brought to the stadium from a sports club and were not told that they were being taken to the rally. "I was training in a sports club. They (organisers) brought us here and I did not know it was a political meeting. I may not vote for anyone," she told AFP, declining to reveal her name. Another woman who also declined to be named said: "I am voting for (Mir Hossein) Mousavi, since he has the backing of (Mohammad) Khatami." Mousavi has emerged as the main challenger to Ahmadinejad and is backed by reformist former two-time president Khatami. Iran goes to poll to elect a new president on June 12.
