BOSTON (Reuters) - Tibco Software Inc will sell products to help companies build and run programs on Amazon.com's cloud computing system, a move that may spur adoption of the fledgling technology.
Tibco Executive Vice President Ram Menon said in an interview on Tuesday that his company will start customer trials of the software at the end of this month and expects to begin selling it by the end of this year or in early 2010.
Amazon is a pioneer in the fledgling field of cloud computing, which is the hosting of services and data on remote computers that are accessed over the Web. Companies have been slow to adopt the technology because it is difficult to write and manage programs for Amazon's service.
Google Inc and Salesforce.com Inc compete with Amazon in the small but rapidly growing field of providing storage and computing via the cloud. Tech heavyweights IBM and Microsoft Corp are getting ready to launch similar services.
These cloud services providers rent time on huge server farms to companies that want to run programs, store data or access data bases remotely, without having to invest in hardware.
Analysts expect the field to grow rapidly over the coming years as companies look to slash costs by outsourcing costly data center operations. Gartner estimates that the market for such services will surge 31 percent this year to $3.4 billion, hitting $10.6 billion in 2013.
Tibco Silver is a bundle of tools that businesses can use to write and manage programs for Amazon's cloud. It will also allow developers to convert programs written for conventional computer systems into ones that will run on Amazon.com.
Menon said that his company plans to offer versions of Tibco Silver that will be compatible with clouds from rivals to Amazon.com.
