ADVERTISEMENT Communities Secretary Hazel Blears came out publicly to say she was quitting so she could "return to the grassroots" and "help the Labour Party reconnect with the British people". Her bombshell came after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's aides briefed reporters Tuesday she would step down in Brown's next cabinet reshuffle, expected as early as Friday. Cabinet Office minister Tom Watson and children's minister Beverley Hughes -- who unlike Blears and Smith are not in the cabinet -- are also reported to be quitting. Blears resigned just 90 minutes before Brown was to face his weekly questions session from lawmakers in parliament. The extraordinary flurry of resignations piles the pressure on Brown amid talk that it could be the beginning of the end for his premiership. The crisis comes on the eve of Thursday's elections for the European Parliament and 34 English local councils -- which opinion polls and commentators say could see the governing Labour Party suffer its worst ever losses. The recent row over lawmakers' expenses, which has led 15 members of parliament to say they will quit, has piled fresh pressure on Brown's already unpopular premiership amid accusations that he has been slow to respond to public anger. "Rats Desert Sinking Ship" and "Meltbrown" were the newspaper headlines Wednesday as Labour's deputy leader Harriet Harman toured broadcasters to insist that Brown would not step down. Asked if he would still be leader at the next general election, she told ITV television: "Yes, he certainly will. There won't be a leadership challenge, nor should there be, because he is the person with the vision to take us through these very, very difficult times." But Nick Clegg, leader of the second opposition centrist Liberal Democrats, accused the government of being in its "death throes". The Guardian newspaper, traditionally sympathetic to Brown and Labour, highlighted the extent to which the tide has turned against the premier by publishing an extended editorial saying: "It is time to cut him loose". Labour "faces its worst defeat in its history tomorrow but the prime minister does not recognise his direct responsibility for the mayhem," the daily said. "The truth is that there is no vision from him, no plan, no argument for the future and no support." There are widespread reports that finance minister Alistair Darling, who has led Britain's response to the recession, and Foreign Secretary David Miliband could be moved on in a post-election reshuffle. A Sunday Telegraph/ICM poll at the weekend suggested Labour would come in third in the European elections with just 17 percent of the vote, behind the main opposition Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. Poll predictions for the local elections are little better. Some reports suggest Brown could face a leadership challenge before the next general election, which must be held within a year, possibly from charismatic Health Secretary Alan Johnson. Other commentators say there is little interest from anyone in taking over the helm of a party which looks likely to be forced out of office by the Conservatives, led by David Cameron, within months. An Ipsos Mori poll Tuesday said support for Labour had plunged to 18 percent, down 10 points in the last month since the expenses scandal. The Conservatives are 22 percentage points ahead according to the telephone poll of 1,001 adults between May 29 and 31. The BBC reported that Smith told Brown two months ago that she planned to step down at the next reshuffle, but intends to stand for re-election as an MP. She was badly embarrassed in the expenses scandal when she claimed public money for two adult films watched by her husband. Darling this week apologised and pledged to repay 350 pounds (575 dollars, 405 euros) after The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that he claimed money on two properties at the same time -- a breach of parliamentary rules.
