NIreland salutes slain policeman
AFP - Saturday, March 14
BANBRIDGE, Northern Ireland (AFP) - - Northern Ireland united Friday to salute the first policeman killed in the province for a decade, as a third man was arrested over his murder.

Hundreds of black-clad mourners attended the funeral of Constable Stephen Carroll, shot Monday in the second deadly attack in 48 hours by republican dissident paramilitaries.
The funeral came a day after a service for two British soldiers killed last weekend.
The three killings triggered fears of a return to sectarian violence a decade after peace accords ended the so-called Troubles that scarred Northern Ireland.
Inside St Therese Roman Catholic church in the town of Banbridge, southwest of Belfast, Bishop John McAreavey summed up the mood across the province, telling mourners that they gathered "at a time of great suffering, loss and worry."
To those who would support the "terrible" attacks that have rocked Northern Ireland in recent days, he said: "You are greatly mistaken: your way is backward-looking; the people of Ireland and Britain have chosen a better way forward -- the way of reconciliation and accommodation.
"We are determined not to allow ourselves to be dragged back into the morass of hatred and violence."
Carroll was lured into a cul-de-sac and shot in the head in the nearby town of Craigavon, in a sniper attack claimed by the Continuity IRA.
The group is a splinter faction of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), the paramilitary force that violently opposed British rule during the three decades of the Troubles. The conflict left some 3,500 dead before the 1998 Good Friday peace accords were signed.
Detectives investigating Carroll's death were Thursday granted a further five days to question two men aged 37 and 17. Both remain in custody.
On Friday evening, police arrested a third suspect, described only as a man in his 20s.
Led by a lone piper, the 48-year-old policeman's widow Kate held hands with her bereaved relatives as she followed his coffin, which was topped with a police flag, his cap, gloves and medals.
Speaking out Thursday, she pleaded that her husband be the last victim of the bloody conflict that had seemed consigned to Northern Ireland's past.
"I hope that this is the last time that anybody has to suffer what I have suffered," she told reporters.
"If something positive comes out of this that would make his death worth it... I don't want Steve to have died in vain.
"I just cannot comprehend the mindset... a piece of land is a piece of land... my husband is just going to get six foot by six foot (two metres square) and that's all any of us are going to get."
Irish President Mary McAleese, speaking in nearby Armagh, vowed Friday that the killings would not knock Northern Ireland's peace process off course.
Among those attending Carroll's funeral were Northern Ireland's police chief Hugh Orde -- who paid an emotional tribute in church -- Britain's Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward and Ireland's Justice Minister Dermot Ahern, plus representatives from Northern Ireland's main churches and political parties.
It was the first time that Sinn Fein -- the political wing of the now-defunct IRA -- had attended a police funeral, a sign of how far Northern Ireland has come.
On Thursday a military service was held for sappers Mark Quinsey, 23, and Cengiz "Patrick" Azimkar, 21, killed Saturday at the Massereene Barracks in Antrim, northwest of Belfast.
The soldiers were ambushed as they collected pizzas in an attack claimed by the Real IRA, another splinter group.
The Azimkar family sent a spray of flowers to Carroll's funeral with a card reading: "We know the pain you are suffering."
The card on the flowers from Kate Carroll read: "To the love of my life. I will never forget you. I love you now and always."
