ADVERTISEMENT The masked attacker, who had still to be identified, took hostage two men and three women, regional governor's spokesman Sergei Cheremnov told AFP. Another two people were forced to hide on an upper floor of the building. One of the women caught up in the incident was believed to be pregnant and was later hospitalised with hypertension, said the spokesman. The hostages were thought to be employees of the URSA bank branch in the quiet town of Leninsk-Kuznetsky in the heart of Russia's coal belt. After an hours-long stand-off in which special forces sealed off the building in the Siberian town, Aman Tuleyev, governor of the Kemerovo region, said on television the gunman had been shot dead. "It hurts me to say this.... Five minutes ago he was slapped down. The special forces did their job," said Tuleyev. Security forces had made safe an explosive device the attacker, who identified himself only as "Sibiryak," meaning The Siberian, had threatened to detonate. All the hostages survived the incident, said Cheremnov. The pregnant woman had managed to escape through a toilet window before the shooting broke out. The gunman "was threatening to blow up the building so it was decided to shoot him," said Cheremnov. Earlier Tuleyev said the gunman had put forward demands for a plane and money to enable him to escape. Cheremnov said the man may have been of Armenian origin but this had yet to be confirmed. The attacker's motive in seizing the building was not immediately clear. Residents in the surrounding neighbourhood in the normally quiet town had been evacuated from their homes. Afterwards, the situation in the town was rapidly returning to normal, said a spokeswoman for the local mayor's office, Larisa Baturina. "The situation in the town is calm. Order has been completely restored," she told AFP by telephone. Located in the centre of Siberia, not far from the Chinese and Mongolian borders, the Kemerovo region is far from Russia's unstable Caucasus region, where attacks on security forces are a regular occurrence. Tuleyev was previously involved in negotiating in hostage situations in Moscow and Kemerovo in the 1990s. The town where the incident took place is home to about 100,000 residents. Television pictures showed local residents anxiously watching around the perimeter of the cordoned off area.
