Indian forces kill 3 suspected rebels in Kashmir
AP - Sunday, March 15
SRINAGAR, India - Indian forces killed three suspected Islamic militants holed up in a mosque in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Saturday, police said. One rebel is still trapped inside.

Four gunmen hid in the mosque as army and police cordoned off the remote village of Sawaran, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) southeast of the region's main city Srinagar, during a search operation Friday night, said Hemant Lohia, a senior police officer.
When the gunmen refused to surrender police opened fire. Three of the militants were killed, while one remains in the mosque, said Lohia.
There was no immediate word from any of the dozen rebel groups that have been fighting since 1989 for independence from mainly Hindu India or a merger with predominantly Muslim Pakistan.
There have been several standoffs around mosques.
In 1993, rebels were given safe passage after a 34-days standoff at the region's holiest shrine, Hazratbal in Srinagar. But another standoff in 1995 at another shrine resulted in fierce fighting that killed 17 people and destroyed the site.
More than 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown.
Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, which both claim the region and have fought two wars over it.
