ADVERTISEMENT The portion of the festival that focuses on interactive technology begins Friday with many watching for the next Twitter, the micro-blogging service that has become a global sensation since making its debut at SXSW in 2007. Technology titans throwing parties or sponsoring events at SXSW include Internet search king Google; software colossus Microsoft, social-networking darling Facebook, and online news aggregation powerhouse Digg. SXSW Interactive "celebrates the creativity and passion behind the coolest new media technologies," according to organizers. Interactive panel topics range from designing websites to what technology startups can learn from US President Barack Obama. SXSW this year added a ScreenBurn portion devoted to the videogame industry and tracks include a panel devoted to Apple's popular iPhones flourishing as mobile gaming devices. Internet services that let people use Internet-linked mobile telephones and global positioning technology to find nearby friends and festivities will compete for popularity among festival goers hunting for parties and bands. SXSW began in 1987 as a place for new music bands to win fans and fame. It has grown to be among the largest US music festivals. More than 1,800 bands are scheduled to perform at night spots throughout downtown Austin by the time the event wraps on March 22. The Film and Interactive festivals were added to SXSW in 1994. The film portion of SXSW boasts independent works ranging from "provocative documentaries to subversive Hollywood comedies, with a special focus on emerging talents."
