ADVERTISEMENT The incident in the province of Logar, just outside the capital Kabul, comes amid tensions between Afghans and foreign troops over civilian casualties in military operations against Taliban and other insurgents. "At around 2:30 (2200 GMT Friday) this morning, the coalition forces raided a house and killed a man and his four sons. They were all civilians," Logar police chief Ghulam Mustafah Mohseni told AFP. Police had not been informed of any operation against the men, he added. Captain Elizabeth Mathias, a spokeswoman for the US military in Afghanistan, confirmed to AFP that troops had conducted an operation in the province's Charkh district about 80 kilometres (50 miles) southwest of Kabul. "Our operation report confirms that five militants were killed during a firefight," she told AFP. "Our troops only engaged after they were shot at," she said. But the military opened an investigation after authorities claimed the men were civilians, she said. The force said the raid was based on "credible information" that militants involved in bombings had been staying at the compound. Several weapons and grenades were found at the compound, it said. About 3,000 extra US troops have recently deployed in Logar and the adjoining Wardak province which have seen a build up of insurgents. "We were expecting additional troops would help us stabilise the province but they create more trouble for us," said Mohseni, the police chief. "This is disturbing." The Afghan government has repeatedly expressed anger over civilian deaths during foreign military operations, mounted to try to defeat an insurgency led by remnants of the Taliban regime ousted in 2001. The United Nations said in February that a record 2,118 civilians were killed during Afghanistan's conflict in 2008, with nearly 40 percent of the deaths caused by pro-government forces, including US-led and NATO troops.
