RAMALLAH, West Bank |
Wed Oct 13, 2010 11:21am EDT
RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - The Palestinians are seeking a map from the United States showing where Israel sees its final borders and making clear whether they include Palestinian land and homes, an official said on Wednesday.
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Yasser Abed Rabbo was responding to a U.S. call for the Palestinians to present their own ideas in response to an Israeli proposal they recognize Israel as a Jewish state in return for curbs on settlement building -- a declaration they have long opposed.
"What is required from the American administration and Israel is that they present us with the map of the state of Israel that they want us to recognize," Abed Rabbo told Reuters.
"Is this map on the '67 borders or does it include Palestinian land and the homes we live in?" he said, referring to the year when Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a Middle East war.
The settlement issue has derailed U.S.-backed peace talks which began on September 2. Visiting Kosovo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sounded an optimistic note.
"I am personally convinced that both leaders, (Israeli) Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and (Palestinian) President (Mahmoud) Abbas, very much see it as in their respective interest to return to and proceed with direct negotiations," she said.
The Palestinians say they will not resume the U.S.-backed talks until Israel halts settlement building on occupied land where they aim to found a state. An Israeli freeze on new home building in the occupied West Bank expired on September 26.
FREEZE
Netanyahu said on Monday he would be willing to request another freeze from his cabinet if the Palestinians recognised Israel as a Jewish state.
He said it would be a "trust-building step," while some Palestinian and Israeli commentators questioned whether the proposal was only a ploy to try to shift blame onto the Palestinians should the peace process collapse.
The Palestinians ruled out the idea -- something they see as a major concession that would be tantamount to political suicide for a leadership whose credibility has already been badly damaged by the failure of past peace talks.
Clinton told reporters that "both sides are testing out a lot of different approaches, offers, requests between each other."
On Tuesday, U.S. State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley said Netanyahu had "offered his thoughts on both what he's willing to contribute to the process, and what he thinks he needs for his people out of the process."
Washington, Crowley said, hoped the Palestinians would do the same.
"We recognize that Israel is, as it says itself, is a Jewish state," he added.

OMG! What a bunch of babies, these Palestinians are. Someone needs to sit them down and explain to them that there are no do-overs in war. Syria,Egypt and Jordan asked the Palestinians to leave their land so they could wipe out fledgling Israel. The arab plan to wipe them out backfired when they lost the 6 day war. They now have to live with the consequences of that decision. End of story

To me, the question of a Palestinian/Israeli settlement is a no brainer. Israel holds all the dominant positions. They should give the Palestinians a take it or leave it proposal. What position are the Palestinians to do anything about it? They can fight but will only see their homes and lands destroyed. I am confident a proposal made by Israel would be much better and fairer than one given to the Israelis if the situation was different.

Palestinians Arabs are told to not recognize Israel and Hamas and the PA keep declaring war and incitement against Israel. Israel has no partner in peace and since the arabs illegally occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem when Jordan attacked Israel in 48 and kicked Jews off their land and burned temples and churches I don’t know why Israel should even consider creating another Gaza in the West Bank giving it to a people created to destroy them. The Palestinian Arab never existed in history and has not culture and are part of the greater Arab world. With Iran encroaching to the North and the fact that the Islamic extremists want the whole planet under Sharia I think Israel should not negotiate with people who will not recognize them and should not give away land that Arabs have no right to!

On the plus side, the prose style of the previous 3 postings infer that it is the same person writing anti-Arab diatribes using different identities, so perhaps there aren’t as many Jewish supremacists “trolling” the comments section for stories like this as it would seem. On the negative side, these are some pretty ugly comments that, yes, make me ashamed of my Jewish heritage, perhaps in a similar fashion as to how a moderate-leaning Muslim might feel when someone like Osama Bin Laden presumes to speak on their behalf.
HAMAS may be one story, but Likud has a real partner for peace with Fatah if they want one, which of course they don’t. If Netanyahu was genuinely interested in peace, which to the surprise of no one he isn’t, then he would do everything in his power and then some to confront those Jewish supremacist settlers and remove ALL West Bank settlements, for starters.

Sounds like a very reasonable request. Showing Abbas a map to be retained by memory is not the same as proclaiming borders to the international community. Once borders are agreed upon, the perpetrator can be judged. Also, nobody should have the right to own a shoulder fired missile along these borders. It would be irresponsible to not police bordering towns and weed out individuals who feel the need to lay claim to their own borders.

Frankly, American’s have no clue… the culture of the middle east is so foreign to Americans and the freedom we have been given by our forefathers (and take for granted)… For us, it is impossible to come up with any conclusion that would make sense to their backward culture.
Best thing for Mr. Abbas to do, is begin an honest talk with his people about what exactly freedom, democracy, and capitalism really means, and how it might play a part in changing the adversarial culture of the entire middle east, pitting tribe against tribe, Sunni against Shia, Muslim against Jew, and looking to the powerful (American’s) for answers to the problems they have had for 1500 years.

The request is an exercise in futility since the Americans are totally emasculated and Israel will never give up an inch. So, the US is incapable of delivering a response. The Two-State Solution is simply dead. The only viable alternative is a one-state non-sectarian country with equal rights for all.

As an American first, and Jew second, it seems to me perfectly reasonable for Palestinian negotiators to request a map, possibly as the start of real territorial negotiations, and to request it from the United States, the patron of Israel.
The bitter conflict between Israeli settlers and Palestinians is one of the 2 hot spots left over from WWII that might still trigger nuclear war. (The other is Kashmir.) The whole world stands to lose, if an Armageddon breaks out in either of these areas.

The Israelis (most Israelis are from Europe) continue to out-negotiate and steal land daily from the Palestinian people.
Special thanks to the ultra-powerful Israeli lobby who easily dictate to the US Congress and the US White House whatever they want. The White House salutes crisply.
Rockets from helicopters, shrapnel from tanks and fighter jets entering the bodies of Palestinians — these are the means by which Israel negotiates for land.
Or am I missing something?
