WASHINGTON |
Tue Oct 12, 2010 6:24pm EDT
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States nudged the Palestinian Authority to make a counter-offer to Israel's proposal for a new freeze on building in Jewish settlements if the Palestinians recognized Israel as a Jewish state.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday said if the Palestinian leadership recognized Israel "as the homeland of the Jewish people," he was ready to ask his government to extend a freeze on West Bank settlement building.
The Palestinians immediately rejected the proposal, which they have long opposed.
The deadlock deepened doubts over the chances of resuming U.S.-brokered talks that stalled last month after Israel refused to extend a 10-month moratorium on housing starts in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinians have refused to resume talks unless the freeze continues.
The Palestinians argue that recognizing Israel as a Jewish state effectively gives up any right of return for Palestinian refugees who fled or were forced from their homes in Arab-Israeli wars to return to territory that is now Israel.
They also argue it would compromise the rights of Arab citizens of Israel who make up 20 percent of the population.
Palestinians view settlements, on land Israel occupied in a 1967 war, as an obstacle to the establishment of a viable and contiguous state.
Speaking in Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley made clear Washington wanted the Palestinians to make some kind of counter-proposal to Netanyahu.
"Prime Minister Netanyahu has offered his thoughts on both what he's willing to contribute to the process, what he thinks he needs for his people out of the process, we would hope that the Palestinians would do the same thing," he told reporters.
The spokesman also offered support for Netanyahu's stance, saying the United States regarded Israel as a Jewish state.
"We recognize that Israel, you know, is a -- as it says itself -- is a Jewish state," Crowley said.
U.S. officials have long spoken of the Jewish character of Israel and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in March said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict "threatens Israel's long-term future as a secure and democratic Jewish state."
Crowley said the United States was trying to find a formula to overcome the settlements impasse and to allow the two sides to resume direct negotiations. The talks began in Washington on September 2 but there were only three face-to-face sessions before the building freeze expired.
U.S. special envoy George Mitchell was expected to return to the region soon and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will visit Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and France from October 13 to 22, the State Department said.

What an absurd request.
It is akin to the American Pilgrims descendents demanding the US be deemed a Brownest State.
What about the rest of the non-Jewish inhabitants?
Also it underlines a very dangerous idea based on promoting a religious state which is exactly opposite to what is required to halt what is clearly religious based conflict.
Frankly the US is showing itself to be lacking in will or intellect to confront Israel and promote peace in the Middle East.

Israel was founded as a Jewish State. The United Nations recognized that they had to separate the Jews from the Muslims in order to keep the Jews alive.
The only thing absurd is the pretense, or perhaps ignorance, of the realities of the situation.
Israel is a democracy and in time will evolve into a secular nation. However, at this time in history, A “Jewish State” is the whole point.

Lets all just pull the wool from over our eyes and admit the Palestinians have never been nor will ever be interested in peace with Israel. End of story. Lets just ignore their little temper tantrums and leave them alone in their misery. Again and again Israel has made peace overtures only to have them rejected over one silly reason after another

To MarkJulianSmith:
In 1947 The UN adopted a resolution of creating a Jewish state and an Arab state in Palestine. The Jewish state IS Israel! Read history books before making clearly ignorant comments! Secondly, Jewish doesn’t mean religious. It means a NATIONAL HOME FOR JEWS, religious or not. Arabs are trying to destroy the Jewish state by hook or by crook from the very start (actually even earlier). Israel to the Jews is the same as France for the French. Got it?

@tergen If ignorance is related to the clear dangers inherent in dividing humanity into religious sects then so be it.
This is the only underlying cause of the bloody conflict in the Middle East –it is not only derived from the Israeli side.
The fact is there was never any intention by the creators of the State of Israel to disposes non Jews of their status as citizens in their own country. To define them as other as the Quran does in The Cow. To believe so and think such an act will not increase violence by accentuating religious prejudice on both sides is the only pretence occurring here.
