Internal leadership polls in Anwar's Parti Keadilan Rakyat, which is the glue in a three-member opposition alliance, exposed deep factional rifts and dented its image as a credible alternative government. But Anwar, who has survived far worse crises during a turbulent political career, insisted the party's sights were still set on seizing power at the next general elections, which could be held within months. "It temporarily damaged (the image) among the general party members and the public," he said of the weeks of squabbling which at one point degenerated into physical violence between competing factions. "But I have met party leaders. They are quite steady. Now we need to meet our supporters and explain to them to remain focused on our goal. That will be my message on Sunday to party leaders," he told AFP Friday. "It is clear as far as the opposition alliance is concerned. We are on track to capture the leadership of the country," he said, after 2008 elections where he made unprecedented ground against the Barisan Nasional coalition. Some 2,000 party delegates will gather for two days to chart the party's future and reassure the rank-and-file after the dramas which included the resignation of one of one Keadilan's leading lights. Zaid Ibrahim, a former government minister who switched to the opposition in 2008, quit last week, reportedly saying he was "sick of the sick leaders in the party" and that the party leadership vote was marred by fraud. Anwar said that the squabbling had been overplayed in the state-controlled mainstream media, and that he was also being persecuted through sodomy charges which have dragged him through a gruelling trial this year. The 63-year-old, a former deputy premier who was sacked and jailed a decade ago on sex and corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated, now faces new allegations of illicit relations with a young male aide. "It is now very clear why they are pursuing the sodomy trial. They want to drag me to court. They want to tie me down from moving around. Of course they want to put me in jail and lock me up," he said. The 2008 elections were a watershed in the multicultural nation, resulting in a stampede towards the opposition among minority Chinese and Indians, and a weakening of support for the coalition from its voter base of Muslim Malays. However, Najib, who was appointed last year, has worked to lure back minorities, and introduced measures to revitalise the economy, which had stagnated under his predecessors. The coalition, which in 2008 looked like it was near the end of a half-century reign over Malaysia, now looks somewhat more attractive. But Anwar said he was convinced that voters remain frustrated over endemic corruption, poverty and lack of media freedom, which were major factors in the last elections and which the government has done little to address. "Nothing has changed now. Prime Minister Najib Razak's economic plans are just a facade. Malaysians are not gullible," he said. James Chin, a professor of political science at Monash University's campus in Kuala Lumpur, tipped national polls to be held in the next few months and said that Anwar's prospects of seizing power are now slim. "Keadilan is still strong, they have support especially among the young and first-time voters. But they are losing support from older Malay voters," he said. "Anwar is still popular, Malaysians feel he is being persecuted. But the longer the sodomy trial proceeds, it will tie him down and make him less effective. Everybody thinks he will be found guilty and go to jail."
