Emory University researchers studied whether seizure drugs taken by nursing mothers lowered their children’s IQ later in life. The researchers concluded that there was no basis for this claim. “While more research is needed with large numbers of women and their babies, these results are reassuring to women who want to give their babies all the benefits of breast feeding but also need to remain on their epilepsy medications to avoid devastating seizures,” Dr. Kimford Meador, the study’s author, said in a statement. Meador’s team followed 194 pregnant women who were taking one epilepsy drug. Of their babies, 42 percent were breast fed. The children were given IQ tests at 3 years old. The researchers said there was no difference in the IQ scores between the children who were breastfed and those who were not. The drugs the participants were taking were carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoid or valproate. Meador said more research is needed for newer epilepsy drugs. A report on the study is published in the Nov. 24 edition of the journal Neurology.
