Getting inside the head of film director Tim Burton
TORONTO - In a long career, director Tim Burton has distinguished himself as the top Hollywood director for things weird, wacky, macabre and beautiful with his films ranging from "Edward Scissorhands" to "Alice in Wonderland." Last year, New York's Museum of Modern Art launched an exhibition covering the 52-year-old filmmaker's career in art and movies, and it became an instant hit.
DiCaprio says "Inception" script was "confusing"
LOS ANGELES - The making of "Inception" presented an immense technical challenge for the cast and crew -- starting with comprehending director Christopher Nolan's complex dream-caper script. Star Leonardo DiCaprio told The Hollywood Reporter that even he needed time to figure out the many layers of the story.
Experts say publicist's murder is "solvable"
LOS ANGELES - As the inquiry into the killing of Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen enters its second week, prominent criminal investigators say that the apparent targeted nature of the crime makes the case solvable. The Beverly Hills Police Department is not revealing details of the investigation, but a city official says the police's working theory centers on the November 16 attack being planned, rather than a result of road rage or a carjacking gone awry. Despite suspicion that the late-night incident was organized, it remains unclear whether Chasen was personally targeted in the shooting.
The great "Contender" - Christian Bale cracks wise
LOS ANGELES - As Christian Bale reluctantly soaks in the acclaim for his role in the upcoming drama "The Fighter," one of the people he should thank is his daughter. It was at an event for her school that Bale ran into Mark Wahlberg, whose daughter is a fellow student. Wahlberg had spent years developing his true-story movie about boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his offbeat, often overbearing family. Wahlberg knew he needed the perfect actor to portray Ward's half-brother and trainer, Dickie Eklund, a once-great pugilist who had lost his career to a crippling addiction to crack. "The first time I saw Christian," Wahlberg recalls of their chance encounter, "I was like, 'Holy f---! I've figured it out.'"
